Reasonably high end : £1000 - £1500
Toshiba/Dell/Sony/something else?
Centrino/Pentium 4/something else?
From manufacturer/shop/web/something else
DVD writer - yes/no/something else
What spec and what will you do with it I hear you say...well I'll cop out of that and say I believe I need a laptop that's gonna cost me £1000-£1500!
TIA

I can recommend either the Toshiba Satalite A20 series where you can get DVD-RW, P4 2.6GHz, 1Gb Ram, 15" screen, 128Mb Nvidia card.
Or the Dell Inspiron 8200 where similar specs are available.

I bought an Acer Travelmate 803LCiB a couple of months back from www.laptop-shop.co.uk
Was the PC Pro A-List winner at the time, dunno if it still is.
Excellent spec. I really can't fault it.

Avoid the Tosh 6100 at present as there may be some quality issues.
The Fujitsu Lifebooks are good value.
personally I'd buy an Apple PowerBook and run Virtual PC if i had to run PC apps

Good thoughts - thanks everyone. Hadn't considered the Lifebooks before - look a bit on the pricey side though
Bit of a luddite when it comes to PCs vs Mac unfortunately - gonna have to be PC I'm afraid
www.getech.co.uk have good prices (using the higher education student discount - about £100 off all other prices I've seen) - any one used them? Customer satisfaction views?
Any more for any more?

Fly to the states and buy a Toshiba from somewhere like Best Buy or Circuit City. You can get a Toshiba with a 17" screen for $1899 (£1200). That is about £700.00 cheaper than getting it here. The only question is getting it through HM customs.
NB. They all have unversal power supplies so all you need to do is buy a plug adaptor for £2.00.
