Finally got my new DVD writer to replace my 1x drive. Did a straight swap and it works perfect. Only thing is that XP is saying that due to the significant hardware change I need to re-activate my copy of windows. Is this normal? Or could it be a virus?

Yes it is normal behaviour. Wasn't aware a DVD writer was a "significant hardware change" though, but hey, who am I?

Did it let you re-activate online? Mine kept saying its already registered foobar off! Had to call some bint up in the end and it probably cost a load!

yeah i had to call microsoft too - when i went to reactivate it it said that i had reactivated too many times for the license that i had - which is bulls4it. Phone microsoft and they gave me another code to type in.

Apparently Windows XP gets all paranoid when you put new hardware in - it thinks that it's been transferred to another PC - well thats what MS told me.

XP takes a digital signature from specific hardware installed in the PC. I do not know which items it checks, but am certain someone else on here will.
