Hi, I have a problem with a pc running win XP.

It had the RPC virus, which was forcing it to reboot everytime I used IE, so I installed the fix and then also ran SP1 on it. As I was running SP1, the RPC dialog box shows up warning me of an impending shutdown.....strange because I'd already applied the fix but I thought may be it's needs a reboot to apply it although it hasn't done before on other pc's.

So it shutdowns...and the fecking thing boots up but only gets as far as the progress bar saying Win XP is loading, but then the screen goes blank and it reboots again, and keeps on doing this...so I cant even access Windows now!

I have tried restarting in Safe Mode but it does exactly the same.

Any ideas please as this is not my pc!! PLEASE PLEASE lol !

When you say installed the fix do you mean a Virus remover ?
ie Stinger from McAfee
As it seems to me you still have the virus and this is causing the errors on bootup

Just adding SP1 doesnt remove the virus just stops the vulnerability

I had this problem also with XP, I ended up reseting all my bios settings to default (apart from my SATA HD) before I could get it to boot into windows. I thought it might have been caused by a crash while writing to disc. Seems OK now after scandisk checked it.

IIRC after updating XP to sp1, you need to re-install the patch to stop getting the virus because SP1 wipes out installed patch

yip i agree, u should have installed the patch again
after sp1. Neways whats wrong is probably the virus has
damaged the os. U could try repairing it with winxp cd
but u probably still have the virus, so i would suggest that
u maybe boot up in DOS, run a scan. If no viruses then try to
repair ....

I get this if I reboot with certain USB peripherals plugged in. Unplug all your USB's bar your mouse and keyboard and try that... or have you already.

I know I always get this if my card reader or Amacom is plugged in.
