The new one will be with me on Friday running windows XP Pro
whats the easiest way to transfer data?

with a cross over cable, you can connect up two PCs with NIC (network card) to copy data/files across. cross over cable look just like any network cables except the wires are wired differently.
so check that both laptops got network card. drop me an email if you wanna loan a cross over cable

if no NIC (Network Interface Card) then via serial port to serial port or parallel to parallel port with appropriate cable. From memory 98 has file transfer utility if not use something like laplink (PC Pro magazine has free version of laplink on cover cd). Or USB key device, basically solid state memory which acts as a removable hard drive with sizes anything from 16mb upto 1gb (but expensive).
