We've been using Wingate for about 4 years with no problems but their latest release seems to be unstable for some reason. Problem seems to be intermittent, sometimes clients connect ok, sometimes they get error 404 file not found. Anyway, I've just been away for a few days and the internet connections has been mega flaky. Needless to say the powers that be have gone off on one and want the situation sorting ASAP.
So, does anyone either know how to fix this Wingate problem or know of 100% reliable (or as near as will do) proxy server software that'll run on win2k pro?
Ta muchly

As little as possible I guess. We've only got a small office and whilst all 15-odd users need access there's only maybe a max of 6 concurrent connections.
Anyway back to budgets. I don't know at the moment, I've just been told to fix it. Low hundreds rather than thousands would be my guess.
Strange that Wingate only seems to go completely t*ts up when I'm away.

I wouldn't mind giving Linux a whirl but I know less than nothing about it. How easy would it be to set up? (I have a copy of Suse 7.1 kicking around somewhere)
It would need to be able to dial in on demand to our ISP via ISDN. And how much is Squid and does it come with a firewall?

actually if you want squid + firewall + DoD then a smoothwall is the box you need.
Takes 10 mins to set up ( no, really ). Try it on a 'junk' pc.
