Not happy - Windows Media Player 9.0
#1
I stupidly agreed to allow XP upgrade the Windows Media Player a couple of days ago to version 9.0
DO NOT UPGRADE
Approx 10% of my MP3 files will no longer play as it does not recognise the file format or something. It is also noticably slower with sizeable delays before opening each file and has some worrying 'licensing' bits attached (all instantly disabled!)

It's definitely slower opening mp3 files. The ones it won't play (even though the previous version did) are typically older ones that were ripped using other ripping software - though it likes some of the tracks but not others ripped at the same time.
Helpfully, the error message links to the Microsoft support page which declares 'no support for this error at this time'

I had the same problem with WMP9.0 under XP and Win 2K. Slow to open files- paused with message "opening media" while the media was sat on my hard drive. Also some codecs not supported and I heard a rumour that DVD playback is no longer supported- can anyone confirm this?

We've all been wary of Windows Media Player 9.0 because of concerns with the dreaded DRM. However, now there's an even better reason: the latest in a parade of Windows Media Player 9 problems allows an Internet criminal to attack your computer and access your media library. Luckily, the attacker won't be able to get to any files except your music files listed in your media library.
Guess who the Internet criminal most interested in stealing or wiping out your music files might be? It's not the snotty little kid down the street - it's the RIAA.
Don't think so?

I'm not sure the RIAA would be able to prove the files on your machine are legal or not from attacking via this route - even if they were electronically tagged, they'd be in the wrong accessing files on your private machine in this way. They're targetting p2p networks.
Thanks for the security correction link - I'm pretty sure there has been a Microsoft update in the last few days that sorted it but I'll check it out anyway. I'd rather go back to WMP8, however ....
