trying to get rid of windows xp

I am trying to get rid of windows xp on my friends computer and put 98 on there to make it more stable. What is the best way to go about doing this?

Question

Fdisk - Format - Rebuild, but XP is more stable that 98SE if the hardware is OK.

Thanks You are local to me I am in slough too This machine is so slow and confused It needs to be re-started all the time just to see the drives

Might be beter to go to win 2000 than 98
imho
Read somewhere old machines will run slow using xp

I noticed a minute ago that he is only running pentium 2 We haven't got a copy of 2000 sadly because I like that I can't get it into msdos mode either because it doesn't appear to be there

Yes I can but can't seem to get to msdos is it possible that someone could have deleted it?

There is no "Dos Mode" on XP. You can get to a command prompt (Run > Command) but this will not allow you to run fdisk (well, you can run it, but you cannot delete the partition), as the hard drive cannot be locked. Also, if the hard drive in NTFS, you will not be able to see it even if you use a boot disk.

You should be able to delete the partitition using the XP CD. Make sure the PC is set to boot from CD first, insert CD, reboot, select the option for a fresh install and you should be asked where you want to install. On this page there is an option to create/delete partitions etc. When you have successfully deleted tha partition, you can fdisk/format and install 98 using a bootable CD or bootdisk.

you cant see the partition when bootin of a dos disk but you can see it in fdisk
