A colleague is looking to buy an Apple laptop for her son who is on a multimedia course at uni. I know nothing about these, axcept that Apples seem to be preferred by the graphics people.

Any ideas/suggestions/tips please?

The new G4's look really nice. I've got an older 800mhz titanium one, and it's a nice bit of kit. There have been a few reported problems with the G4 12" ones (overheating really bad, I think).

Try an I-book, but I found it too slow (mine a G3 500mhz).. so I went for the G4.

Try going into an apple center / reseller and have a look. But be warned, if you see a G4 you'll probally want one!

All depends what its being used for. The ibook is pretty powerful but not as capable for heavy graphics work which the PowerBook can handle. If you don't need a big screen there is a 12" PowerBook

I'm a student and went of a 14" 800mhz iBook.

A big advantage of the iBook over the Powerbook is that it doesn't damage quite as easily due to its plastic shell.

The 14" suited me better due to the fact that I watch quite a few DVD's on it and so prefer the larger screen (the other option is a 12").
