Can anyone describe it?

Have a 40GB Deskstar sat on my desk now that makes very strange noises.

Guess what, it's a 40GB 75GXP

I just waiting for the day my Deathstar goes....

You could run the Drive Fitness Tester on it. If it gives an error code then claim on warranty

My IBM HD has been making strange noises since i bought it, hasn't gone wrong though. I have quite a few at work and they do the same thing but have not failed.

I've had two fail on me a 60GB 75GXP, that made a kind of clicky seeking back and forth in vain trying to read noise. A 60GB 60GXP which always made a strange squeak, but eventually died without any real noise. Both replaced under warranty for a 75GB 75GXP and a 60GB 180GXP, both still working, though after reading that the drives didn't like heat (the dead drives did run very hot) both in HD coolers.

Both drives failed DFT, I did initally use DFT to low level the first drive and reuse, but the problem re-occured again shortly after so I wouldn't bother.

One of the ibm disks in my raid 0 setup failed last night. Luckily I use norton ghost so I'm back up running on the remaining drive. I won't be buying ibm cr4p again.

I've got two generic IDE racks with fans and one coolermaster HD cooler (hoooge chunk of ali and fan), I think the coolermaster will last better, while I can't remove the HD easily it does have a built in filter for the fan...

Oddly enough you can get these in PC world's 'brown box' section now, which is sometimes just easier than mail ordering...

I had my 15Gb deskstar go belly up at the end of 2002, I sent it off to IBM in the Netherlands (RMA) and got a new one back mid January.

I've got one thats on its way out as well. Making strange noises and giving errors in the fitness tool.. Need to get it backed up asap.. all my music and films are on there. wouldn't want to lose them..

Anyone thats had one replaced. Where did you get a packing case for sending it back? Looking on the website they seem to be very specific about what packaging you can use to return it. And how much did it cost to post it to Holland? Cheers

I bought one second hand off a mate it went bang within weeks, real ****ter, lost lots of stuff. Since bought an 80gb Seagate, that had a few funny moments but Ive since found if my PC is run with the side of the case off it is much happier, it was obviously getting too dam hot. I have another IBM Deathstar that I put the most important 50% of the 80gb onto, it seems ok at the moment but I dont trust it at all.

when I returned mine I happened to have an old CDROM/HD box lying around, the ones with foam bits in.

They sent it back tome in a similar box, but with plastic packing inserts.

The cost of posting it to holland was only a few quid (<10) I used the Silver service at the Post Office. Insured upto £80 I think.

I've got a deskstar 80gb seems fine so far. Hope it doesn't fail, I've just spent hours loading my CD collection on.

Going to build a new RAID 0 stripe out of two 60GB Maxtor's on Monday and try to kick the GXP back into life to dump some stuff off.

Crap timing - I was going to start copying stuff off it next week as well. Grrrrrr!

The maxtors are very good (at least the 740dx series) for 24/7 running reliably, as you prob know already

Hehe, I run the 40 gb ones here 24/7 quite happily. Not sure if your 60 gb's will have another platter tho, just make sure they have a little air passing over them and they should be as happy as larry

Cheers,

Nick
