Hi
My mate has just got himself a new PC and a router so that 2 other PCs can share an internet connection over the home network.

The problem seems to be that the adsl connection comes out of the wall in to the ADSL modem, which then needs to go to the router, which then needs to go to the PC. However, the ADSL modem has a USB connection only, which would normally go directly into the PC, but of course needs to go into the router first. But the router does not have a USB connection.

Has anyone any thoughts on how you get around this?

Bingo... ADSL/USB router. ADSL wall socket >> ADSL modem >(USB)> Router >(ethernet)> PCs

Draytek 2200USB isn't the best route to take. I would remove USB out of the equation. Therefore I would consider the D-Link DSL-504 or the Thompson Speedtouch 510 v4 over the Draytek.

Both the D-Link and Thompson have built-in ADSL modems. Much better solution

The 2200USB works well for me as my broadband package was bundled with the USB modem (it was >2yrs ago!). By the sounds of it, the chap's already got the USB modem. Why duplicate with a router/modem combo device?

In Networking terms USB is the spawn of the devil. Saddam's WMD are actually a large collection of USB ISDN and ADSL adaptors amonnst other sh*te network gear.

Ok - I might exaggerate a little....

Why even buy a router?

Just setup ICS on the machine with the connection and share it round the network?

Dead easy....

Deano - I quite agree. If I'd had a choice of access devices when Freeserve installed the kit, I'd have gone for an ethernet router. However, I was given an Alcatel "Stingray". This was I get the LAN & DSL connected and remain largely within the T&Cs of the contract. It's honestly not given me any problems.

ADSL ethernet routers are faster than USB modems with a router attached.

If you use ICS then your PC is directly connected to the World....not a good idea....and it's slower.

ADSL routers are less than £100 now.

As long as you have a decent firewall running there shouldnt be any problem...

My Netgear DG814 works a treat!

Seems to be getting cheaper by the day, too.
