Question

Hi All,

I have a Compaq Proliant rack mount server which I have powered off and then plugged a compaq scsi tape drive into and then powered back on.

Trouble is on start up I get the following error message:

1776-Slot 0 Drive Array - SCSI bus Termination error.

Internal and External drives cannot be attached to the same SCSI port.

SCSI Port 1: Check cables.

----------------------------------------

Erm now Im stuck! any ideas anyone?? how do I get into the bios on these things? or isnt that the answer - any ideas appreciated.

ta

remove the drive, plug it into the onboard connection and not that on a smart series raid card...

There isnt a bios as such..

think its f10 for system partition utilities... but you shouldnt need these...

You need to download the Compaq Utilities from their website - I had a similar problem with a Compaq earlier this year...

Thanks

Compaq machines have their "BIOS" / system settings / diagnostics on a small partition on the boot drive or you can run them from floppies.

The error message you have mentioned seems to indicate that the tape drive is not terminated properly or your machine does not support internal and external devices on the same SCSI bus.

Either way, you will need to Compaq utilities to configure the server to see the extra device - but it does need to be terminated properly so I would check that first.

Thanks

Gavin

Ok I fixed it, heres how:

Very easy - took the lid off, unplugged the cable inside doing nothing on port 1. Put bag together - conflict resolved!

thanks for help

You can just boot from a smartstart CD and get into the bios. (Setup utilities as it's known)
In order to install the setup utilities to a hard disk you'll need around 40mb free space (Although this should have been done when the server was built in my opinion!!)

Good luck

If you do a manual install from SStart then you have the choice as whether or not to install the diag partitiom. Also if the machine was built using the SStart scripting tool kit then it may also have been left off.

There's a target to get the next family of servers shipped with a full config application in BIO, therefore removing the need for the CPQ utilities to be on a separate partition.
