got a reply from codemasters help desk to solf the prob with Insane game. I do understand the terminology but I was looking where to set it up and got a bit lost or is it to do with ISP?
Running WinXP and using a router.
--------------------
4. If the PC is behind a firewall or the connection uses a router you need
to take into account the following settings:
Direct X will need port 47624 or 6073 tcp both outgoing and incoming
2300-2400 tcp both incoming and outgoing
2300-2400 udp both incoming and outgoing
CMN needs 2234 tcp both incoming and outgoing
Map TCP/UDP port 2234 and 2302 to the server
------------------------
CMN is software for online gaming.
thanks for any advice

You need to set this up on the router. The exact method varies depending on the make/model, but with most you can access the router config pages at IP address 192.168.0.1 - if this does not work for yours, check the instructions that came with the router to see which IP address it uses instead. You will also need to know the IP address of your PC (the one you want to use for these games) You can find this by typing "ipconfig" (no quotemarks) at a command prompt (Start > Run and type "Command" (no quotemarks)then Enter)
Once in the config pages, look for an option similar to "Port Forwarding" The page should be fairly self-explanatory, but briefly you need to enter each of the port numbers you have been given and forward them to the IP address of the PC you are using. If you can select the protocol for the port, choose TCP or UDP as specified. You may need to enter inbound and outbound mappings separately. Save and exit then test your games.
BTW You will not be able to run these games (or others using the same ports) on other machines in your network unless you re-map the ports to their iP address instead of yours.
Good luck

Assuming your router provides some kind of firewall you need to set it up to open the following TCP and UDP ports.
47624 and 6073 tcp both outgoing and incoming
2300-2400 tcp both incoming and outgoing
2300-2400 udp both incoming and outgoing
2234 tcp both incoming and outgoing
You then to set the router to forward these ports - TCP/UDP port 2234 and 2302 to the server, (if you're gonna run a game server)
47624 and 6073 tcp both outgoing and incoming
2300-2400 tcp both incoming and outgoing
2300-2400 udp both incoming and outgoing
2234 tcp both incoming and outgoing
You then to set the router to forward these ports - TCP/UDP port 2234 and 2302 to the server, (if you're gonna run a game server)

I don't remember getting an install disk with my 5861.
connected it to ADSL and plugged PC into one of the RJ45 ports, opened internet explorer and went to either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.254.254 (can't recall which) to access the setup pages.

Ah, you've got a modified/restricted 5861 - its probably BT branded?
Not much you can do with them I'm afraid. If you search this forum you may find instructions on how to upgrade/reset the firmware to remove the customisation (IIRC a post by Mr Footlong), but don't know whether this will then let you do what you need.
When I attempted to do this with my BT branded 5861, the end result was an unusable router, and a very sheepish call to my ISP reporting it as faulty Fortunately the engineer that came out to replace it didn't have a clue.
Afraid you may have to resort to purchasing a different router. May I recommend the Netgear DG814 which will do what you want.
