as the XP is a newer version it wont let me to install the Win2000 just by executing the setup.
The command prompt is with the XP still running in the background so no help either
is there any way over this so that I don't need to uninstall WinXP -> install Win2000 -> install WinXP (with the option on the start up)
thanks

I dont think its possible to install an earlier version, youd need to dual boot if you wanted xp/2k combination.
If you wanted that you would have to install 2k 1st on a separate partition

Barnaby, that's a good point. I'm sure I've done this to a machine at work, ie; booted from the W2K server CD and then blitzed the hard drive to put W2K on it. I would guess Robert is trying to avoid losing data, though I've known to be wrong in the past!

to make a new partition I would have to reformat the HD, am I correct?
I'll try to boot from the CD but I have a bad feeling that it still will tell me that a newer version is already installed.
cheers

I guess you could keep the config.sys file and rename autoexec.bat so that it does not load, I *think* this would drop you into DOS, not sure as it's been a while since I did this. You could try hitting Ctrl + C and that should break into the autoexec sequence and drop you into dos.
Don't suppose you have a Win98 Startup Floppy do you? if so then you could boot from that, into DOS and then do whatever you want.

You could boot from a simple DOS floppy. If it had a CD-ROM driver on then you might well be able to run the win2k setup from it.
But I suspect this would be the same as booting from the win2k CD.
A quick web search has shown lots of people who have simply re-formatted their disks to do the downgrade. Couldn't find anybody who had managed an install over the top I'm afraid

1st way - use partition magic 7 or 8, create a spare partition, install xp to that, then move all you data across, you will have to reinstall apps though.
2nd way - there is a way to install 2000 over XP, but I can't remember how I did it, there are docs out on the web, but you need to be pretty competetant. There was some reg hacks/fixes IIRC.
**first of all delete the unistall key from your current reg hive, that's what the new os uses for it's detection**
shunty

Set bios to boot from CD
Insert XP disk and follow setup until you get to partitioning.
Delete all partitions
Exit from XP setup, change disk to W2K disk and shutdown PC.
Restart PC, should boot from W2K disk and run setup.
I think that should work.
