WinXP - Browse Entire Network

What would cause it to get locked out ?
I don't think it is, as I can manually search for computers on the LAN and access their resources that way. Wouldn't that confirm the account IS NOT locked ?

Not even sure if we have a WINS server. Do I need one ? How would I gain ?
Whats a domain master browser ?
My Primary and Seconday DNS are working fine. Internet browsing is spot on.
Apologies for my ignorance on the matter, incidentally.

Ah well this is going to be difficult to resolve if you not aware of your infrastructure...
Is this a large environment or domain (ie multi site/ multi subnets)?
On the AD DCs are you getting lots of errors in either the System or Directory Services event log ?
Is this environment connected to the internet ??
cheerio ???

Clients are configured by default to use netbios over TCP
Why would the WINS server have a DHCP lease ? I just installed WINS server on the main Win2k box which has a static IP, and runs a DHCP server for the LAN. Do you mean change all the leases the DHCP server generates to H-Nodes ?
Whats a "DC" ?

so that was about 15 mins before the browsing stopped ?? Strange that as the browser service updates itself every 15 mins on the master browsers
I assume you released/renewed your lease on the client after adding the WINS server and WINS node settings on the DHCP server ?

Can anyone tell me why I'm unable to 'browse entire network' on our LAN, with WinXP.
Error: Dialogue box saying "Lan is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource. An invalid operation was detected on an active network connection OK
I'm running TCP, and logged in as administrator on the LAN.
These problems only occur on the Win2k and an XP machines (2 of them)

Yes, logged into the Domain.
It occassionally works, but not today. I'd like to get to the bottom of it. Active Directory isn't working either. I've never bothered with it in the past but I'd also like that to work too.

Sounds like a NetBIOS issue, browse the entire network is on the NetBIOS layer. Youd need to check your WINS servers and you Domain Master Browsers and Master Browsers to see if everything is working ok..
Check for errors in the event log to see if your getting any netbios/election warnings. Also check to see if netbios is enabled on the adapter first to see if netbios is even being used..
As for you AD problems - how long have you got ?? Primarily check that the DNS servers that host the AD zone are all functional..

I didn't install a WINS server, because I was told it was neccesary at the time. I've got no problem doing that now if its needed.
The domain is relatively small - 20 PC's
We're SonicWalled and have an ADSL router to connect us to the net via NAT.
The main win2k server uses DHCP to issue clients with IP and DNS info. At present no WINS server is installed I believe. I'm now going to go and have a read up on WINS and what it offers.

are you clients configured to use netbios over TCP ?? By default they prob are..
If you create a WINS server set up the DHCP lease to use H-node netbios clients - its quicker..
ensure all the servers and clients are pointing at the same wins server
did you find out whether your DCs are getting event errors ?

you wanna configure the DHCP to ensure that the clients behave in a particular manner when name resolving via WINS. You can either do this via registry on each machine or if there are DHCP clients setting the option 046 WINS/NBT Node Type to 0x8 (Hybrid). This just means that clients go via the WINS server first before looking around elsewhere whne doing netbios name resolution
DC is Domain Controller - if your having problems with the AD still you need to make sure your DCs are healthy..
