Question

Hiya

A colleague was trying to export a database to import into a slightly older relase of Oracle (both Oracle 8). When he used the newer db's exp.exe and tried to import the resulting file, he got a msg complaining about the national character set.

So, he tried to use an older version of exp.exe (the one relating to the database he's importing into). When that was run, with no parameters such as which database to connect to, it said that it was the newer version in the banner that comes up. Even when renaming this file to exp_816.exe and renaming the new version out of the way, he still got the banner saying it was 8.1.7!!

In the end I suggested trying the export with the old (8.1.6) exp.exe, ignoring the version banner, and importing it into the old database. Guess what?!?! It worked ok! So, the banner would appear to be lying, but....and here we finally come to the question ....where is it getting that version number from? We couldn't find that string in the registry.

If you've made it through this waffle, thanks! And if you know the answer....

Iain
