Broekn ASPI layer for WinXP - boo!
#1
Been messing with CDRWIN 4 and downloaded some adaptec aspi files (v4.7) which have knacked up my ASPI layer on WinXP, resulting in me losing my CDRW and DVD drive letters.
Any ideas how to get em back ? There's no uninstall option for the Adaptec ASPI files.

You could use the WinXP restore function from 'Accessories' 'system tools' and restore your PC to a point before the ASPI install.

There must be a better method than that.
ASPICHK reports no problems.
Device Manager puts a yellow and black exclamation mark thru my CDRW and DVD...
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

since you are using windows XP, can you not "roll back" to the previous drivers? (goto device manager and double click on the ASPI device)
or try deleting the device and then refresh in device manager. it might re-install back the generic windows XP drivers.

maybe you need to hack the registry! dont forget to do a backup of the registry first!
also goto start/run and type gpedit.msc and snoop about for anything to do with the ASPI.
btw, the stuff you downloaded, were they for windows XP?

suba, yeah the APSI set was the right one, for XP.
I've found something called Force ASPI which will completely remove the ASPI layer, or completely install the ASPI layer. Both options have done nothing.
I'm now running thru windows update to see if a service pack will inadvertently fix it
I agree about the registry hack, but don't want to touch anything without clear instructions about what I need to remove / edit

Completely removed the ASPI layer, but still no icons for CDRW and DVD in 'my computer'
Again, both devices have an exclamation mark over them in device manager with the error text I mentioned above
Will try that catchup link - thanks
In the meantime if anyone has any other ideas...

In the end, took Bruce's advice and did the roolback. First time I've used it with XP and have to say the way its implemented is very impressive.
Did the job, perfectly.
