Nvidia vs ATI
Ok so long long ago I ran an old Nvida card 4600 I think, I had issues dropping to desktop and crashing and found it was shoddy drivers from Nvidia.
I bought a new PC 4 years ago and that came with a top of the range ( back then ) ATI 5870, the PC ran like a dream for 3 years, I then upgraded the card to a Nvidia GTX770, now it ran ok for 12 months then I start getting issues. In games I cannot run anything now without VSYNC enabled ive checked temps etc, I don't clock them but still no good.
Ive succumb to the fact that the cards faulty or just doesn't like windows 8.1. Nvidia did comment that Microsoft had patched something that makes their drivers act weird, but my view is Nvidia should have a close MSFT relation ship and not pass the buck.
One of the errors ive seen in Warcraft is, blah blah had denied access to Nvidia DLL, ive changed Virus products even ran without one and defender disabled but still crap.
Ive now ordered a new R290 ati, im off back I,ll report back tomorrow if its any better...

All joking aside i suspect its a driver issue related to windows compatability with 8.1.
my 570 runs 99% of games on max settings so 770 should walk all over them

Don't mean to thread hijack, but I'm looking at a 570 card for a i5 or i7-based gaming machine. They seem quite cheap compared to the 670 and 770. Are they still a worthwhile card to look at? I'd be upgrading in 6-9months anyway, so this would be a stop gap, just to get the machine running.....

Hi there
I've currently only GTX560Ti which is OK for my needs, don't play games on my PC,mostly my GPU is used for CUDA processing and that's it,mostly 3D stuff where I'm using CUDA,but how many issues I've in my life with nVidia and their drivers, previously I've HD5870 which has been faultless card and this GTX560 come on,after 1 year of owning,my temps went through the roof(100C at idle),I've replaced thermal paste for Shin Etsu paste, now temps are in nice 30C and drivers,in some apps I've been not able to use CUDA or using GPU for acceleration
Due this I' considering ditching nVidia and get again ATI/AMD,looks like I will go with R9 295X2,price has went down from £1k to £400(in US I'm able to get this GPU at this price) or I will wait and i will go with new R9 380X or 390X series, which looks like will outperform 970/980
I've used too GTX750 which hasn't been bad,but drivers issues,I've sold it after 3 months
Thanks,Jura

Well the r290 came today, colours look richer, games all run without a hitch, world of tanks maxed out 50 to 80 fps....
Only issue I had was the 27 inch screen had a black border but after googling it, it's common if you use HDMI, there is a setting on catalyst for overscan or something on monitor just slide that to o% and it filled the screen
Great stuff, will go test it again in a bit but feel like **** got man flu so in bed eyes streaming coughing like a lepper

500 series cards are some of the noisiest I have owned, like having a hurricane in the CPU case!

Not always - my 570 Phantom is near-silent in daily use.
However, in real terms I would suggest getting a 750 Ti if you want a cheap card. Can be had very cheap (~£120), offers very good performance for it's class, and doesn't require a PSU upgrade to use as it draws all it's power through the PCIe bus.
Being from the newer series has support for the later features (eg shadowplay), and is am excellent short-term card.
Edit: Check this out: £114 delivered for a 2GB factory-overclocked card: http://goo.gl/8TD9pO

750 Ti's are significantly slower than the GTX760 which is roughly equivalent to a GTX570 but quieter with lower consumption (less heat and cooling required) and includes shadowplay and live streaming.
A 750TI would be a downgrade from his current card so not what he is looking for clearly.
The 760 would give slight performance increase over his GTX 570 and add shadowplay video recording and live streaming.

Frankly a 750ti is a cheap junk card and if he has a GTX570 already, he wont need a power upgrade for a GTX 760.

Seriously?
Having always been in the red corner, it pains me to say that the Nvidea 970 GTX is the way to go sub £260
Sees off the R290X:

Much Lower TDP, lower power usage, faster frame rates
AMD are due to release toward the end of Q1 so we shall wait and see. But for now, the crown goes to Nvidea.

Don't do stats they mean **** to me... After using a 5870 for 3 years and buying the GTX 770 as what I thought was an upgrade, according to GPU boss its a big upgrade ,I didn't notice anything different, FPS may have been higher but I wasn't in any low FPS scenarios. So smoothness I didn't know and actually thought it was a waste of money.
Stats aside my point was shoddy drivers from Nvidia, nothing but trouble, and this was exact same many years ago thus it leaves a bad taste in my mouth for anything Nvidia,
Don't get me wrong though many people have seemless experiences mine have been 100percent good with ati, temp FPS not bothered for that extra bit of grunt its unnoticeable I've been checking temps and its doesn't get any hotter than the Nvidia did around 63 on full load, but I do have the sapphire tri cooling model anyway which is a few degrees cooler...
I think if he wants Nvidia then I'm with you, but ATI my comment stands.
