Question Laptop memory question

Is there a difference between SODIMM DDR3 and DDR3l where both are pc3-12800 DDR3-1600 1.35v?

I think there is but I can't understand why when the specs appear identical

Thanks, i'd already read that article. That article would also lead you to believe that if a DDR3 SODIMM is 1.35v then it is the same as DDR3l anyway as the 'l' refers to low voltage for 1.35v or 1.25v for an SODIMM.

However in what i've experienced they aren't the same as i've seen it where a laptop has 8gb DDR3l pc3-12800 DDR3-1600 1.35v SODIMMS but when replaced with 16gb DDR3 pc3-12800 DDR3-1600 1.35v DIMMS you get the POST screen beeps warning you the ram is incompatible.

The SODIMMS are fine in another laptop and the laptop they are then being tried in does support 16gb ram so absolutley no idea why the POST screen beeps for wrong ram occur.

How many ram slots does your notebook have? What model is it?

Some laptops will only take 4x4gb modules not 2x8gb modules.

Anon just go to

scan your system and buy what it shows. Unless you want to really get budget stuff, which I wouldn't .

memory issues later in life can be a real pain identifying, Start good and youll be ok.

mem doesn't cost much anyway

Thanks for the replies. The laptop in question takes 16gb ram (2 x 8gb). I have already scanned it with the crucial tool and whilst the ram specs are identical it gives a slightly different product code for the ram modules to the ones I already tried.

That's what I can't understand though, if the SODIMMs are the same clock speed, same voltage (and obviously same number of pins) then why wouldn't they work.

The only difference is one is pc3-12800 and the other pc3-12800S. What does that S denote that makes all the difference?

Is one single sided and one double sided by any chance? (chips on 1 or 2 sides of the pcb)

Both double sided. There really is no clear explanation why the 16gb won't work. Same clock speed, same voltage, same just about everything except the differing S on the end of the pc3-12800 and the 16gb not having the S.
