First thing, make sure the disc is clean.
Try hoovering the vents on the ps2.
And get a lens cleaner kit, i think you can get these from most decent hi-fi/game shops.
If none of these work.
Its buggered.
Best i can do.

I have a cleaner disc which i bought with it back when it was released and was thinking id try that this evening, never used it before so it could be that and it has sat beside the TV since I got it so it might need a hoover.
I suspect its buggered though, just froze to a blank grey screen during Tiger Woods.

Also, does it play dvd's?
And also some games come on dvd's, either silver or goldy type disks, and other games come on the purply bluey type disks.
Does it do the same thing on either?

Ive tried blue discs, PS1 games and my Region X, I will try a DVD based game tonight.
Same happened to a mate last week (he told me last night) and he ran a CD cleaner through it and its all working again apart from an annoying squeek like a wonky wheelbarrow (his words not mine)
Maybe i'll get a CD cleaner but i think its fuc*ed

Prolly laser optic block, either knacked or needs adjusting.
New ones are around £50 and recons £30.
Not a hard job, but postage is a pain, proper packaging/insurance etc.
I would suggest a local console specialist as opposed to Currys/Dixons.
If all else fails my m8 will get it sorted, but you'll have to post it etc.

I am also having a problem, and my PS2 is legal!
It will not play music cd's or the blue backed games, but new silver backed games and DVD's are fine. I got it the day it came out, so it is over warranty by about 4 months.
I went back to the shop who told me it was knackered and to contact Sony, who probably wouldn't be able to do anything. Have tried lens cleaners to no effect.
Bloody marvellous. Have not had a response from Sony, if I don't hear anything am going to contact Watchdog. It is a faulty product.

Interesting to read this.
THe old playstation 1 was plagued by having a plastic laser carrier which after a lot of use would make the ps1 skip as the plastic 'bowed' and the laser wasnt reading the disc 'straight'.
It started manifesting itself on fmv clips first, sounds like they havent sorted it in psx2.....

Seriously, if anyone else is having problems email me, I am considering getting a log of problems together to confront Sony as a job lot, and if they can't help will take it further.
I am convinced the machine is programmed to break after the warranty expires!
Also the service I have received from the dealer is shocking. They are not interested at all.

I tried a DVD game on mine and it worked, it seems we have the same problem, i have been told that its the laser that is the problem because its not reading the discs properly, apparently these are easy to install, like a plug and play device, can anyone confirm this and if so where can they be bought from????

Funki
If its modchipped take it back to the installer.Due to heat buildup or badly routed wires one of the connections may have come away from the pcb.
If you intalled it yourself remove the case and double check all wires are firmly soldered to the board.
If its a Messiah(or Clone)or Neo there are loads of ways to check if its working correcty, but you have to access the chip and remove wires.

Do you play them a lot firstly just out of interest.
Just an idea and i know people wont like me saying this but when you pay £200 squid what are you to do.
Go and buy another one then after a week or so put the buggered one in the box and take it back and get a new one. Then sell the other one to me for about £20 and JD (job done)
Just an idea, dont shout at me! LOL

I've had some problems with certain DVD such as the latest Farscape box set. Plays the first DVD fine but second can;t be read. Both DVD work fine in my PowerBook G4.
Service from dealers is poor due to Sony's warranty procedures. I made EB change mine , the first time it went faulty as I stated I'd not bought it from Sony so you sort it, whcih they did, on the spot ! Is anyone else having problems with DVD playback with the image going lighter than darker continually.
