Default Can't uninstall McAfee......

it came with my new laptop. It's NOT listed as a program, so I can't uninstal it.

I now also have Sophos, which is far better, but it appears that the two are interfering with one another and I now have 83 viruses...which neither find, nor clear.

Any advice?

Tomorrow I will phone the laptop manfacturer for support and also McAfee if I can get a number.

Not a happy bunny.

Tomorrow will probably see it wiped and me start again......or it will suffer an unfortunate accident.

God I LOATHE computers.........

I always format every computer I buy and install what I want on it.

Not sure how you'd get rid of it if it's not showing in the installed software list. Maybe just delete everything related to it.

Think we are going to have to.

What O/S do I put on it?

Windows 7...safe and I know it well?

Windows 8.1....better than Windows 8 and ASUS offer support for it?

Windows 8 is gash.

As for mcaffee either disable it and run the uninstall tool.

Or run windows in safe mode with networking download and run the removal tool.

Or find out what services mcaffee uses, stop them, then run the uninstall tool.

There's several ways to sort this out.

Sounds as though McAfee has access protection enabled. Click on the icon in the system try to bring up the virus-scan console, select access protection and set it to disabled.

You should now be able to deinstall this without difficulty.

I fixed a couple of computers for people where they've caught something and basically anything they downloaded got deleted supposedly by the virus checker. It wasn't the virus checker at all. I downloaded the software I wanted on another PC and used it off a memory stick to clear up the PCs.

It's gone back to the lad who put Office 2010 on it, he's an IT tech, works for the local authority.

If he comes up blank there's another at the wife's school. Ex IBM.

If he comes up blank, I'll phone ASUS and McAfee. Damned thing will NOT defeat me.

Tip:
To make it appear in list of Windows programs to remove in Programs and Features, there are only two registry keys that you simply have to change so the values from "1" to "0" in the registry:

PATH: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{ProductCode}
KEY: "NoRemove"
VALUE: 0

PATH: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{ProductCode}
KEY: "SystemComponent"
VALUE: 0

Remove "Wow6432Node" from the path for 64 bit applications. If you don't know the Product Code, search the name of the program under the Uninstall key.

The upshot of all this is that NO-ONE, not the lad who got rid of McAfee, not a nephew who worked as an IT tech, NO-ONE could get it to update. It just refused point blank to connect to the Windows store

I finally lost patience with it, rang Microsoft, was offered another chatline and took it.

Their technician had control of my computer for TWO HOURS AND TWENTY-THREE MINUTES before he finally said, "It's working!"

He reckoned to have done a clean instal...whatever that was...I didn't lose any programmes.

It then too nearly an hour to download the update and forty-five minutes to instal it and update again.

Working now and much better.

Now awaiting the NEXT saga.....there is, apparently, another large Windows 8.1 update to 8.2 due any day now..........
