I'm not a fan of steam cleaning, as steam tends to penetrate every nook and cranny and get into areas it shouldn't. My preferred method is to cover all sensitive components (intakes and electricals), then wet wash the engine, starting with a citrus degreaser. Here's a guide to how I do it...

I'm tempted to give this a try

Has anyone taken pictures while doing this on a Scoob ?
I'd like to see what needs covering altogether if possible

Thumbs up

for scoobs you dont really have to - just dont go wild with the hoze pipe stay away from the IC and alternator - just watch the battery and you will be fine

before

after - with taken off air filter

hi im gonna jump on this thread.

Am i right that the detail bit after the washing is very important to stop things becoming rusty etc after washing off ness protecting grease layers?

Im particularly worried living on a little island as the air/mist/fog/spray (everything!!) is constantly full of salt.

Do i just use things like are used on rest of car (spray wax/rubber seal treatment/plastics sprays etc) on the relevant metal/plastic/tubings?? Will this protect it all enough??

(ive never done engine bay as you can tell!!!)

cant quite compete with some of these pics but i did have a go today with some ordinary degreaser. was sparing with both degreaser and rinsing water, as i was too afraid of doing something wrong!! so it isnt a perfect job, maybe ill be braver next time!!

all i need now are some blinging bits of shiney metal for some covers!! esp the alternator cover which is pitted and beyond the help of cleaning!!

Looks like a good first attempt to me. You do indeed use all the normal gear for under bonnet work - however, some products work better than others, and the ones that we use professionally are listed in the engine part of the store. The guide on the site also goes through the basic steps, which you seem to have followed well...
