Would you buy a Cat-D written off car?
I'm going to have a look at a Bug Eye later its very cheap but it was a Cat D write off in 2004 I've already got a few questions to ask the seller (where was the repair work carried out etc) but do you guys think its worth a punt?
some times though its the only way for some people to own the car there really after.
as for the car in question, i would want to make sure its been repaired to decent standard, no nasty cut and shuts,ETC the main thing is the price, if the car in question is only say £200 cheaper than a straight one get the straight one, its simple really.
what was the damage, is it really that much cheaper? a chap i know has just chopped his bugeye wagon in for a sti and got £2500 and that had a new engine.

Would rather buy a cat d with no repair work done to it - that way you know EXACTLY what you are getting.
5 years ago i brought a bug eye sti from an auction cat d - needed side skirt and a little bit of welding underneath - i knew what needed to be done and could get it sorted myself.
Paid under the odds for the car (at the time) £6900, sold it on last year for £5300 so no major loss - its a gamble but maybe hold out for one where you KNOW excatly what work needs to be done!?

Someone has one for sale on here for £3600, not listed as a total loss ?
Pay a bit more for one without the 'damaged repaired' status and it will be far easier to re-sell and hold its value better.
£2700 is too dear for a high mileage CAT D bugeye estate, 'listed' cars are normally worth 30-50% less than non-listed !
I work at a Jaguar main dealer and the rough 'rule of thumb' for valuing such vehicles is half of Glasses Guide trade price!
Are you sure it's Sonic Blue, I thought that colour was only available on the classic shape ?

I would have thought there were enough about to be able to get yourself sorted with a straight one at a price you want to pay. I would not buy a cat-D because of the potential probs you may have when it comes to selling it.

I paid £4000 for a cat cat d 2004 wagon, only 34k miles with full subaru service history. Had it a couple of months now, mint for that money. Owned several cat c/d cars. Not a problem if you no what your looking at.
Cat d is usually not that bad and dont need to be vic checked like the cat c. My mate bough a 58 plate astra vxr 11000 miles for 4.5k. the car had slid down a bankin and was more damaged pullin it out, because the car was under a year old the owner got a new car from the insurance, under £2 fixed it, not inclucing time, and he just sold it for 9k....
Cat Ds should be priced 1/3 less than undamaged cars.
I wouldn't buy one myself as usually there are no records of what was damaged with the owner stating it was minor yet the car was amazingly written off by the insurance company

You'll struggle to sell it on too IMHO as they tend to be frowned upon by most people albeit if you've no plans to sell then it may be OK.
I saw a RS4 for sale recently at £16k (Cat D) which fits description of 2nd para above ... what damage must it have had to write off a £24-26k car

a cat d write off can be worse then a cat c, either can be written of for as little as a scratch to needing a new front or back or side.
I think it depends on who repairs it, and how much information is available.
I've looked at a few recently, but for me I'd happily buy one if its from someone who I trusted. Either that, or I would buy a wreck and get someone who I trusted to fix it.

Ask to see some photos of damage, may just have been keyed and the respay cost may have made it uneconomical to repair, on the other hand it could have had a major front end and repaired on the cheap.
If its being sold by a dealer, get the former keepers address from the V5 and try and get in touch with them, I did this years ago when looking at a MkV Escort Cab, dealer told me it was written off for a cracked bumber, previous owner was really nice and sent me the pics she took of the car after the accident, needless to say it was a hell of a lot more than new bumper, whole front end so I walked away!!
