Hi guys,

Just got my car back from having the cat/downpipe replaced with a secondhand one and the dash lights on for the cat. Does this mean that it's fooked.
Garage told me to warm the car up and make connections under the dash, drive 7 miles and it will reset?

Any thoughts

Car's a MY94 Type RA

 

The sensor in the downpipe is the EGT (cat on fire) and is not required, nor will it put a CEL on. I have replaced my exhaust and have removed the EGT completly with no CEL.

As for conecting the wires and driving 7 miles never heard of that before

Could do a fault check and see if it spits anything up, or contact the garage and ask them what they have done to cause the CEL.

On a side note, you don't even need a cat on a pre '95 import

 

I believe Cats are required from 1993 onwards. My CEL isn't on, it's the cat on fire light that's on, and it's driving me mental.

my 92 wrx had a cat and when I fitted the decat I had the cat on fire sensor on. Cannot remember what I did though to remove it (ended up going apexi power fc so that prob sorted it)

 

Yours is an import yes? Built before 1995 yes? Then no cat required for emissions on MOT

Sorry mate, didn't mean to sound like I was biting. This cat lark is genuinely confusing. It's a My94 L reg import type ra and it failed the mot so called due to the cat being fooked. No light on or anything but the garage states I need a new cat? So i get another fitted and since that it so called scraped through the emissions test? and now I got the bloody dash light lit up for my cat. and to be honest it would've been less heart ache to buy a de-cat. certainly easier to find.

You need to state to ythe MOT'er that its a pre 95 import and it requires a 'non-'cat' test, he will change the set up on the emission machine, it opens up the pass/fail margins, can't remember the exact figures off hand.

Have done a quick search on cat light for you and it would seem it is just a case of unplugging the sensor

k reg onward (1992) cars require a cat m8, could just be the lambda sensor rather than cat, best bet is get someone to diagnose it, cost u mayby 20-30 quid but will point u in right direction,

b13bat is bang on the money re: cats the problem is convincing your less then average intelligent MOT tester to look in his hand book in regards to early import vehicles, to realise they don't need a cat test,
as for the OP you need to unplug and leave unplugged your cat on fire sensor and then disconnect your battery for for over 30mins to reset the ecu and the light should not be on, if the light is still on you have a problem with you cabling, and will need looking at further
