Engine blown - options?

Engine blown - options?
Hi,
The engine in my 1998 Impreza Turbo developed a nasty rattling noise today, and while trying to nurse it the few miles home the noise became nastier to the point that the car stalled with a squeaking rattly noise, and died altogether. I appreciate that I will probably need a new bottom end, a rebuild of some sort. How much is this likely to cost. Is it possible to get a new engine for it? Again, cost. I am able to do a lot of the work myself I think, would this make the cost of a rebuild more reasonable? Also how much would the car be worth with a duff engine?
Thanks for any help.

with busted engine worth sod all, shell value basicly, would be better to strip it and sell for parts.
as far as rebuild, if you don;t know what your doing 100% you many end up rebuilding it multiple times. as far as cost realy depends on what spec you build, but your talking four figures at least.
second hand engines are a risk, you will never know the true history or how its been treated (unless you know the car it came out of specificly)

Average build cost is about 2.5k, you have not said where in the uk you are though?
As Tidgy said, 2nd hand engines can be a mine field, buy one from SMR engines and your throwing your cash away, if you can hear one running before you buy then all the better, but its probably better going for a rebuild.

As to the cars worth, without knowing any specifics apart from the age, I'd say you'd do well to get a grand. I bought an MY00 with a blown engine for £1.5k 3 years ago.

Oh god yeah, DO NOT - repeat, DO NOT!!! - get an engine from Prestige Partz (nee MDKL) and/or SMR Engines!!!!!!
They keep changing trading names to get round liquidation issues, so can still trade, etc. Whether this is them, dont know. But they did have a Rainham location - or was it Barking? - when they were called MDKL and Prestige Partz...
I bought an engine off them and had a tale of woe... just like many others on here...

Mines just about to be a year old in January...... I think there all just second hand from Japan ? And what ever you get you might be lucky as I,ve been or unlucky as others have been ? I fully expect it to let go any minute and have expected it from day 1 lol , but it still runs smooth and sounds gorgous , I,m saving for a rebuild anyway tho

Just to add to warnings from others. Do not under any circumstances buy an engine from SMR. I got caught by them and since then I have heard loads of stories about them, none of them good. Total crooks.
