Started the car and heard a horrible noise coming from the engine. After looking into the engine bay I see there are two belts, the right hand one has snapped.

I pulled it out and it has the following written on it:

Fuji Heavy Industries 73323AC000 GATES made in USA 4PK895.

I need to drive to Europe tomorrow, does anyone know where I can get a replacement part fitted ASAP? Also, can I still drive the car? What was the purpose of the belt (alternator?).

I assume the car still runs with no warning lights on the dash?

Yes, I had to drive the car a very shore distance (about 0.5 of a mile). Took it easy, and it drove fine.

No lights on the dash.

It's a wrx sti 1998, and I am in Chatham, Kent.

 

The one that goes to the right of the engine is for the a/c compressor.
The left side does the power steering and alternator.

So it's quite simple - if you have no battery light when the engine is running and the power steering still works then it's the a/c belt
Not a problem to use without the a/c belt - just check the area of the belt for any debris.

If the abttery light is on then, obviously it's the alternator/pas belt, you can still drive it. But your sterring will be heavy and how long you can drive for will be dependent on how healthy your battery is.

Subaru dealer "SHOULD" stock them (although my nearest one is rubbish with stock and it's even owned by I.M. and spitting distance from their HQ!! )

Oh, and pray the belt failed due to an aged/damaged belt and not a seized a/c compressor

 

Yeah, if it's just your A/C belt then nowt to worry about ................ continue driving!

Just get it fixed whenever you can ... maybe even in Europe while you are there? But, I would wait until you return - no need for A/C anyway at the moment.

The car does drive normally (power steering feels like it used to + dashboard clear of any warning lights).

I need to pop out in it to get some Optimax, so I will keep a close eye on it. I'll check under the hood for debris first.

I have recently moved to the Kent area (from Swindon). I've done a quick search and found a Subaru garage (Walldonway, Larkfield, Kent). No answer from them today. I'll call them next week and book it in for ASAP.

I didn't fancy being the cause for tailbacks on Le Shuttle tomorrow morning

Yes a/c= air conditioning.

 

Got my first Scoob just before xmas from Walldonway, 5 mins from the m20. The car had to go back for some minor bodywork touchups, very pleased with the service there, got a nice Forester for the day too Ask for Tony, he's your man
