Oil change every 3K???
for the last 9 months of owning some form of scoob i have made sure that every 3K (inbetween services) i have changed the oil and filter. I like to ensure that the car stays as mechanically sound as possible. who thinks this is necessary?
Also thinking that i need to learn how to do it myself. Bit hazy when it comes to the filter and also cranking the engine to get pressure with the new oil. Could someone provide specific details on how to do this.

I don't know if Subarus need their oil changing every 3k but I doubt it.
The old Ford CVH engine needed the oil changing every 3k since it was naff. Same as most of the Ford range I always changed the oil every 3k simply because they had to be done often.
I doubt many Jap cars need the same amount of care to be honest!

If you use a decent synthetic (real synthetic, not 'synthetic') oil then it'll last for 10,000 miles. Even if its a track day car, youre changing the oil more than twice as often as you need to*.
*unless youre using the ****-poor quality 'synthetic' oil that Pete has been recommending.....

IMHO Oil and fuel are not things to be scrimped on.

All depends on what oil you use, how much BHP you run and how hard you drive.
The 6month/6K schedule is based on normal road usage (i.e within speed limits), with no mods and normal semi-synth oil.
As soon as you start going out of the above parameters with hard use, excessive cold starts/short journeys or extra BHP wil make the oil degrade sooner....two ways round this: change it more often...or use high quality synthetics (motul/silkolene etc) and maintain the usual routine.
Using better oil AND changing more often on a relatively standard car is overkill IMO, but it doesn't do any harm except for your wallet.
