I know a guy who works for Esso and looks after the national distribution network.

He said that typically Esso unleaded is between .5 and 1 Ron higher than the standard.

I went down to bath last night and on the way back was running low on fuel so stopped on motorway
services on M4.

Having always used BP Super unleaded I didnt realy want to change but I had to as was running to low
so I filled up at Esso

What can I say huge difference car was pulling stronger etc better all round can anyone through any
light on this

I have found also that Esso SUL fuel seems to be of a better quality, and always use it if possible.

My mate's uncle recommends ESSO. He is an Aircraft engineer, and his airline uses ESSO because it is better quality.

 

Elsewhere on here today, others have been stating that Esso is useless and that Shell is the best. Is there anyone out there who actually knows the truth? Is there a truth? Is it not all down to production processes differing slightly?

Surely someone reading this BB must have a reliable contact who can tell us if there is any benefit in using one make over another. I happen to use Esso SUL in my STi IV, and I haven't had a problem in the last 10,000 miles (I hope). However, if there is a benefit in moving to another brand I'll do that.

I've not really noticed any difference between Shell and Esso, both of which I've found to be great. Bizarrely, I've actually occasionally noticed that Jet fuel (and I mean Jet not jet ) seems better - I rarely fill up with it as there's no garages on my trip to work, but the once or twice when I have done, it seemed to pull a bit more strongly and I got better fuel economy - both signs of a higher RON rating. May have changed now of course as I haven't filled up there in a while.

I've always found Shell best, then BP. Once ran on Esso (SUL) and car ran like a bag of spanners?? Shame as Esso is cheaper than Shell

 

I normally try to fill my MY93 WRX with Shell SUL, but my regular garage has just changed ownership to Texaco.

I have tried Texaco SUL in the past, and it seemed no better than regular 95 Unleaded.

I just filled up at Esso and super was 87.9 per litre, and on top of that you got 2p with your voucher and the sticker said 98 ron.

Garages are allowed to keep their 98RON badges on display for a short while over the changeover (98 to 97). This does not means that the fuel IS 98.. it is 97RON, it's just the garage is too cheap-skate to change their sign.

 

I've always found that Shell and Esso are about the same. Esso is 87.9 plus 2p off, and Shell is 86.9 near me!! If you have a smart card, you can get 2p a litre off the Shell too, making it 84.9. I was told last night though, that Shell are going to stop this as too many people are taking advantage of the 2p off offer!!
