WRX's designer Takeshi Ito said about it,"We have mainly designed the vehicle with driving dynamics, functionality, and distinctiveness in mind. There may be some people who do not prefer the new Impreza's distinctive styling, but we believe that the headlight design enabled us to have better visibility and dynamism accomplished by sculpted 3D design!"
Nope I'm none the wiser either! but the only reference to design I can find!

The impreza was an indirect replacement for the Leone.
The head of the project was a guy called Hideshige Gomi, whilst the chief designer was Masashi Takahashi. Takeshi Ito was in charge of the engineering, Masaru Katsurada was working on chassis developement.
The car (according to this excellent book i have
) has a bit of a hint of Honda CRX, Ford Scorpio and Peugeot 309 in the developement stage, i suppose in the end it comes down to what they wanted to make it into...
