Hello everyone, Just bought a MY93 legacy turbo, unfortunately is has the seemingly common tappet problem, quite noisy when cold.
Just wondering if anyone has tried Slick 50 and if it is recommended and if any noticeable difference has been noticed from the use of it.
I'm going to give the engine a flush and oil change and am tempted to try some Slick 50 has I have used it previously, in none turbo cars, with positive results.
Any responses appreciated.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Freeze!!! Step away from the 50! Don't do it!!!! They were sued here in the states for false advertising. Of all the people the tried it, all but one said it has no effect, and a few said the things got worse. Just a warning, but it is your car.

I had the same problem on my 1994 Legacy Turbo Estate. I found simply changing the oil did the trick.But the noise would come back after a couple of months.So I think frequent oil changes seem to be the answer,which is no bad thing really.

Cheers Pete, I think thats what I'll try, give the engine a flush and change the oil every 3000ish miles.

I would also steer clear of engine flush if I was you, as I have heard some horror stories relating to this and turbo cars. I can't imagine an Impreza needing such drastic measures anyway, unless the oil in it at the moment is really like tar.

Just buy some normal (cheap) semi-synthetic, run that in it for a few hundred miles and then dump it and put some good oil in. The key to a sweet engine is to change the oil regularly (every 3000miles or so).

Thanks for the advice peter and mike, any advice on which oil you think I should use, which would quieten the tappets down and be good for the engine would be much appreciated. I don't mind paying for decent oil if it's going to prolong the life of the engine.

wyns do a special product to cure this problem but is only avvaliable throught dealers and is backed by subaru, noisy lash adjusters is your problem

Use the absolute cheapest semi-synthetic you can get as a flush and then run something like Castrol RS (10w 60) which has a very high heat rating (as in it can take very high temperatures before it starts to break down) which is what you want for a high performance turbo engine.

Some Halfords Superstores are (were) doing a special deal on oils, where if you spend more than £50 you got £10 off, which made buying the good oils in batches of two a lot cheaper (especially if you have a friend who uses the same oil).
