Had a chat with an old boy at Tiley’s open day. He was telling me he was 74 and before retiring used to do quite a bit of driving. He said I had a nice car and what was it. I told him a little about the car. (P1) I then asked him if he wanted to join the SIDC and he asked what benefits there were. I told him about the mag tax disk holder and track days and 10% discount. He said he was a bit old for track days but would like a picnic by the side of the track. He also said he liked the thought of a 10% discount from Tiley’s. He said he was driving at 140 mph only the other day. I thought ah love him and got him an application form from Steve. He said he would fill it out and join up but maybe in September as he was living on a small pension. I waved bye bye as he hobbled out the gate, got into a Silver Impreza Turbo and roared off down the road like a rocket.
I only hope I’m like that when I’m his age. Which won’t be long. (yes I know)

I think you'll find that's 40mph no matter what the speed limit.

Am I the only one who finds the thought of a 74 year old man who hobbles to get into his car doing 140 MPH a little scary??

Do you really think he still has the reactions and reflexes to travel safely at that kind of speed??

Trouble is if he got caught at that speed or caused a crash the police would let him off as its easier than trying to prosecute a 74 year old....

Excellent!!
I`m knocking on a bit (57 going on 19)and I love quick cars as much now as I ever did (probobly more!) My son Chris is a "chip off the `ole block" with a Sapphire Cossie and a Focus RS on order! I cant see me with an equivelent car at 74 though (no savings- spend all my cash on things I enjoy!)

Bob,

Sounds like Peter's still going strong then.

Did he tell you about his radar detector?

Exactly mate. This is why all the other Impreza drivers move over when on one off the SW runs over Exmoor. They see an old fart like me gaining on them at a rapid rate of knots and just move out the way.

Edited at I can drive OK but just can't spill

Moray/
Yes he was on about a radar detector and I showed him mine. After seeing my Morpheous Geodesy he has decided he wants one of these.
He had his wits about him and was a game old boy for 74 years young. I wonder If he would like an Exmoor run with me and the youngsters.

I reckon if you have the bug you'll always have it in you no matter what the age.

I would rather be travelling at 140mph with a 74 year old who can 'still' do the business than a twentysomething kiddie who is going straight into the nearest bush!!

There are always complaints on this board about old farts who drive slowly, then when we get one who drives quickly we're quick to criticize.

Make your minds up, folks

True. It is not a question of age but of ability, and the ability to recognise it.

When I was twenty I thought I was an an excellent driver but very few people were brave or stupid enough to travel with me!

My ability has not greatly improved, my capacity to assess risk has.
