Question

Recently got a Bell 550 for my MY01 thanks to PCB's group Buy. Very nice it is too, but not sure if I've got the ideal placement for it......

Several mounting options available but all seem to have limitations:

On windscreen high up near mirror - good front & back line of sight but conspicuous & the power cables are so rediculously small that you can't run the cables along the screen & behind the facia. You just have to have it dangling down.

On the sun visor - as above, plus you then can't use the visor

Centre of the dash - good rear-ward view but front hindered by wipers which block forward line of sight.

In the end I've stuck it on the dash between the instrument pod and "A" pillar which seems ok for forward view but reward is blocked by me & seat.

What's everone else done? Can you get longer cables to overcome some of the limitations of the other options?

I don't know if you have the same cables that came with the 990, but I have mine in the top left corner of the windscreen, the cable runs down the edge of the trim, through the glove box and just reaches into the lighter, as long as you use the none coiled one.

I have yet to find a better place.

I have mine (990i) on top of the dash, mounted with Velco. It's just about peering over the top of the wipers, and this doesn't seem to have affected its range - I still get loads of warning for GATSOs.

I do get a large number of 'fake' laser alerts though. Bel had told me that this was probably sunlight, but I've now had one at night - I'm 99% sure they were fake.

DT,
I also got a 550 group buy for my my01,up until now I've had it mounted on the suckers about 3" up from dash centre, but I also found that it fits spot on above the mirror with the big advantage that it is almost fully hidden from view.

I've already made a cable up to reach there but before I fit it i want to test it on a gatso............you would'nt believe it,I can't find a gatso locally that works!
I was going to do the 'range test' experiment i.e Keep driving past it with the 550 mounted in different positions.

The 'Radar Alert' certainly works,I was trappin down this country lane a couple of days after I got it when it suddenly shouted the 'Brake word' at me,I felt so smug when I slowly drove past the wa**er

Do you all remove the detector when you leave the car as with the front of a stereo?

Yep, it's not exactly the smallest thing for carrying around with you though

Robertio,
Why carry it around with you. Just put it in the Mrs handbag. No problem!

isnt that what the centre pod is for?

along with the link tuning module?

I am plannin to mount mine in the bottom right hand horner of the screen.

Doesnt affect performance at all from what I have seen so far.

At the mo it runs on the stanadard cable, but I am planning to route it behind the dash and connect it permanently to teh same ignition feed as my guages!

DT,

I've a Bel 990 and it's mounted up next to the rear view mirror with windscreen mount.
For the power I cut one of the supplied power cables to about 12 inches and terminated onto the map reading light.
Very neat, although not everyone has a map light

Cheers,

Rob.
