The 535d M Sport is a nice car (I say that because I own one) but it's no M5. Remapped it can approach 350bhp and silly torque but at the end of the day it's still a diesel with a 5k rpm redline. Great for cruising but just not as raw as a proper petrol powered monster.
I thought about an M5 (in touring guise) when I was looking for mine but it just seemed too costly to run and could generate some eye watering bills. Combined with my current 40 mile a day commute would mean I'd want to run a second car for during the week to preserve the M5 and my wallet. All that combined meant the 535d was a better choice for me personally but I'd still love an M5.
That said the diesels can also be pretty costly when they go wrong so I'll be interested to see what I get quoted to extend the warranty once it ends in December. Out of the years warranty I've had it's paid for two new injectors and an oil breather separator (minor leak).
