The wind measurement apps I've seen use sound, and are surprisingly accurate. There are apps that come with hardware for measuring wind. Personally I put a wet finger in the air.

All I know is we're on the beach choosing sail to put up and mate whips out his iphone, like it'll save the world lol, and I'm afraid it wasn't very useful
