Google Sccobypedia.
Type R a nice car, and although the dccd type R box is good (not quite newage 6 speed territory) they are still a weak link. There also not good for commuting with the low ratios.
Blobeye 2005 STI is Dccd. 2003-2004 was non dccd. There easy to tell apart, Dccd version has "wide track" which is given away by rear arch extensions and updated dash. You'll need 7k+ for one.

The 5 speed box on the newage wrx impreza's is definetly weak area if power levels are over 330 bhp and doing frequent launches, but bear in mind the classic type r's are quite a bit lighter so its not as much strain on the box.
If you do go for a type r get the one with the longer 5th gear, Mine has the longer ratio 5 gear and driving off boost following traffic i can get about 35mpg .

I agree completely, the 5 speed boxes on the newage are a let down for power hunting, beyond say 350/350, but the 6 Speeds are clearly more than capable of holding this power an much more without issues, in fact I know of may at have moved from PPG to 6 Speeds for 600-700bhp.
The lighter car is clearly going to make things easier of any gearbox, but then there is a lot to factor in also such as driving habits, track days and what clutch is used.
Personally going by what the OP is looking for, I think he would be better with a nice clean standard Blobeye STI, but then I would be biased Then at least he has the foundation for whatever he decides to do with the car for much less hassle and money than a classic.
Re appearance of Classic v Newage, that’s a personal choice, I prefer the look of the Hawkeye over any Impreza to date, in fact a Spec C white Hawkeye would probably be my ideal Impreza, or a Hatch, but Im still yet to be wooed over.

Hi Rob,
I think you are exactly right, though i love the classic looks i think i want the blobeye STi with a few little mods and as low millage as i can find. I will save up for a few weeks, should be able to afford it by the end of the month. There is a nice user on here that is going to let me have a look over his blobeye, i have never even sat in one
I'm sure i will be after more advice in a few weeks when i'm on the hunt for the STi...
Thanks for the advice everyone.
