Frayz it's funny you should say that because I realised I was adding value to the car as a whole and it helped me justify in my mind investing some money in it (even if invest is not a word used normally in many areas of the car world)

Let me put it this way... I know what I payed for the car.... I know what I've spent on the car... But as to value when it's finished that I don't know but I would be genuinely interested to see what people think in wide terms.

One of my future plans for the car will quite possibly be an engine refresh but that will not be in the short term, my short term plans are to get it running and set up well then I will fit the gauges followed by getting the dent man on it and then I will detail it. Wheels will be in the spring unless a second hand set appear at some point and the trim parts around the windows and up and over the drainage channels are looking tired so I will price that up as well but again in the spring as I have some recovery to do first.

 

I'd say you're looking at £9/£10k as it stands for a fully restored car like that nice it has wheels etc.

Things are worth what people will pay mate. That's why I put my car up for £25k. I don't care if people think its a lot of money, if someone wants my car. That's how much it is.

 

Yes I agree.... It's like your car in the respects you could not afford to pay for someone to do the full build, could you imagine dropping mine in and paying to have all of this done, if I'd listed my hours like a garage would have I don't know where I'd be at X per hour but I know that no one could afford to pay for it.

When you say the car has dents, was it only the undercarriage getting worked on?

Dents are the usual located down the sides but no paint damage with them, they will come out nice and easy and no one would ever know.

I looked around the car with the sprayer and we both agreed on the paint in general was very good in the areas we decided to leave, a good detail and it will come back to life. Two reasons Mickey was firstly the main one was cost as you can imagine it seriously adds up and secondly I want to maintain as much integrity to the car as I can and to keep OEM paint allows that.

 

As much of a lovely thought as that is frayz I'm going to disagree with you,the current market will simply not allow that much of a premium on Si's car as it didn't allow 25K on yours.
With the hours and money in mine it would be great to think its worth 30K but there's not a chance of that happening which is why all the big spec cars get broken for parts and will continue to until the market changes.

 

Ryan, it is that simple when you don't have to sell a car.

I have absolutely no doubt that nobody is going to buy my car for that money. But I don't care, my point is if they want it, that's ow much it is. If they wanna go build their own, go find out how much it costs to do.
I'm don't have to sell my car, nor do I want to. So if someone wants it, that's the asking price.

Fully agree there and as both me and you know full well it costs a fortune to build a car like ours but if you don't 'need' to sell and can wait then you can ask what you want granted but if its a case of needing to then it's back to basics when selling and it's worth what someone will pay.

 

People break them because finding the right buyer takes longer and they're worth more in parts.
Cars will be sought after in restored condition like Simons in years to come. Reason being they have be cut up and pratted around with and there will be none left.
Ford made millions of mk1 and mk2 escorts which when we were younger could have bought 2 a penny. Now there £5k for a rusty old shell.
Good cars will be sought after and paid for, restored like what Simons doing will be worth more than the some of its parts in years to come.

Unfortunately people want gold for brass money mate.

Not at all Ollie, I think anyone doing this for a living would have to run this as a side venture tagged on to a main business, even though I've done a lot myself so far a large part of this has also been research and "project management" I really think the key to this is timing as well as prep work and getting all points to converge as in when the shell turns up tomorrow and the rebuild starts.

Just imagine Ollie you gave me a van full of rust and I dropped this lot back off with you.....

Unless someone has an unlimited cheque book I've realised the only way to cover the ground like I have since Christmas is to do as much as you can yourself and certainly as much of the dirty rotten laborious work as possible.

I was forgetting I did not completely get away with no work yesterday after Rhys sent me back home with these few items, The rear lights needed to be cleaned and the sealent needs removing from them because it's very old and quite scabby.
The power steering pump needs to be degreased and painted before refitting.

When I started this project I bought a load of paint via eBay at a good price, multiple can deals and when it arrived I thought I'm never going to use that I'm going to have a lot left.... Well I've just about rattle canned out ! In fact if I do anything more than a few small parts I will have to buy some more.

Frayz I've just realised I need to go and dig in the shed, I should have the other two OEM pulleys off T31 WRC in there, I need to paint them to match.

 

I have to say that the work you are putting in to this is astounding - when I look at projects like this my efforts pale into insignificance and I wish I had more time on my hands to take mine further down this sort of route

Thanks for that Jon I really appreciate the words of support from everyone as it does help a lot, it spurs me on. I never thought I would ever be able to do a job like this but I find myself here, quite mad really
I have found an energy in the work as mad as that sounds but the more I got into it the more I wanted to do, many hours in the evenings and weekends without getting cheesed off with rust getting close now though at last.

Umm well nothing to much at the moment..... The shell was still with the paint-shop before lunch but was ready to be transported, it has been removed from the spit and bolted back onto the transport frame. Andy also does a lot of breakdown work which is his main job these days and when he has a call he has to go and he has the towing vehicle so things can get erratic to say the least so I just need to be patient and it will get back to the main workshop.

There's enough pre assembly to be going on with so fingers crossed there's work being sorted in prep for the shells arrival. I've been out on the bike all evening plus it's our monthly meet tomorrow night so even I'm struggling this week to finish a few bits so it will be back on plan for me Thursday at home too.

Frayz if I am ever asked the question "what have you learnt from this project that you will take with you" the answers is simply "patience"
