Hey,
Managed to get a test drive on a 993 Turbo 4 on Friday at Park Lane Porsche.
Negative points:
Accessibility
Ergonomics
Offset pedals
Tatty interior
Tinny doors
Pathetic gearbox (flimsy and looong shift)
Positive points:
Out-right speed, monstrous and relentless (but only noticeable from my Mak after 70MPH)
Overall feel, car felt one piece, not multiple joins. Move the steering and the whole car follows instantly.
Design, looks beautiful, especially from year.
Visibility, 360 all round. Perfect.
Overall, when I got back into my car, I honestly felt like it was a big con. There's me, in a 30K car trying like hell to justify the 60K Porsche (98 R) but it just wasn't happening. I wasn't convinced, I'm afraid.
Perhaps I need a longer test drive, because I hear that a 993 is like a good vintage wine and needs time to mature.
Matt,
I agree with Gary that I don't wan't a white knuckle ride everytime I go out for a drive. Main reason I considered a 993 Turbo was for its 4 wheel drive ability. No doubt, though, on track, the RS would waste me, as it already has in the past! But I wanted this to be a competent road car too.
Thanks a lot guys for your advice, I am truly gratefull for the links, tips and help you have all offered.
Cheers!
Cem

Cem,
Sorry to bring this up again ..... as I understand it Harry M both owned and published Evo (until Autoexpress bought it last month)...(?).
Harry ran the 993T as his car ~ through the business I'm sure, but (since it's his business) ultimately from his own pocket(?)
Agree 100% that running such a car in his position MUST have great advantages - like Michelin (I think) "asking" him to try a set of their boots on it for example. Sure it helps when it comes to dealer service too....

Mik,
Funny enough, I looked at the credits page of Evo magazine this month and listed near the bottom was:
Managing Director
Harrison Metcalfe
Seems you were right! He does have an interest in Evo.
