Porsche 993 Turbo4

Cem,
They are without doubt the best 911! The only downside I can think of is that a service, i.e a normal (minor) oil change will cost anywhere from 450 to 750 pounds, depending on whether it's main dealer or specialist.
Apart from that, they're bullet proof

Nice bit of kit been shotgun in one, Millenium Falcon quick and they feel as though they have been hewn from a solid billet of steel.
Personally, I'd take a R34 over a 993 Turbo, rarer, quicker, cooler and they can do your tunning fund a world of mischief.

R34 Quicker, hmmmm? I suspect something shady is going on with the road test cars. The standard R34 has a power to weight ratio which isn't even as good as a standard impreza turbo, and around 100bhp/ton less than the 993 turbo-4. They may be tuneable, but just to match the turbo-4's power to weight, you're going to need around 435bhp, and aren't they meant to get unreliable once you start hitting 450bhp and above?

Cem,
As was said earlier, I believe Pullicino are a good bet if you're after a left hooker....their ads usually have one or two in them and it says if they haven't got one they will be happy to source you one (but can you wait that long )
Incidentally, I drove past the local Porsche dealership today to see a gleaming black, brand spanking new, 996 Turbo in the window......mmmmmmmmmm LOL

Fantastic choice lots of speed / street cred and no stickers but having owned one for a short while 5 months can tell you a few things to be prepared for i.e. lots of tyres , lots of fuel , lots of attention from plod , and lots of scarry moments upon pushing it beyond your and its limits in the wet , it will not forgive you like the MAK.
And Cem forgive me for asking but your not buying one because you got passed by a Carrera at Donno are you
Regards
Tim

I believe we have something in common:
1st a scooby sti, then a EVO TME, and now a 993 T4!!
I have had my 993 Turbo 4 now for 2 weeks and I can assure you that the it is truly amazing. I have a LHD car and it really makes v little difference in day to day driving.
The previous owner also had the a Ruf engine conversion which has pushed the BHP up to 505, and with lots of Techart interior bits, not too much though. The suspensions is H&S, which at first I thought would be too firm for day to day driving, but it is MUCH more comfortable than the Mak.
I am probably going to be at the Southern EVO meet in Twyford tomorrow, 8th April, so you are more than welcome to have a look.
As I have Ruf exhaust system as well I the sound is absolutely unbelievable, however, when sealed in the car the noise levels are minimal. It has all the creature comforts, ie Sat Nav, Cruise control, CD, elec leather seats, on board computer, etc etc.
I have to admit something here, that I drive nearly everywhere with my window down!!!, just to get that immense rumbling.
One thing I am not looking forward to though are the tyres. I have not pushed the car too hard as I am still weary off having a peddle that will push me from 0-100 in 7.8 secs, but because of the power I get this awful burnt rubber smell whenever I come to a standstill!
Let me know what else you need to know or if you want to meet up. I have just tried my works email and it is not working so post something here for now.
You HAVE to do it! Only problem is..... WHAT NEXT???
Simon

Buy one, if thats what you like. They are an awesome car and more importantly bring it over my neck of the woods and have a police driver teach you how to drive it properly
Awesome bit of kit, proper quick. Awesome grip as well, I would happily spank it for you.

Sorry mate - just jesting - being serious, I would probably go for it and keep my fingers crossed on the running costs. Have fun while you can!! If it costs too much, you can always get rid of it again!
I don't worry about all this depreciation and running costs malarkey, if so buy a Perodua Nippa, it's all about having a bit of FUN (and a pose of course..... ).
Go for it...

As Dave T-S said.....dont bother thinking about running costs and depreciation .
If we all thought that way I'm sure very few of us would be driving what we do.
If you have the opportunity to go for it...DO IT. I know I would if the finances were available.
(...about that house darling...you don't fancy a porsche do you )
LOL

Spence,
RE: Is the 964 turbo II that bad ????????
Look up the links on the 1989 carrera someone posted earlier last month. The 964 full stop is a horrendous vehicle to maintain. The 964 turbo II used the 3.3l engine & and therefore may cost less to maintain although there are horror stories that have been published........
While Subaru's arent the cheapest cars to maintain - 911's - especially older ones are roughly triple that of a subaru - mileage depending obviously...

Cem,
Don't be surprised if a main service on a 993 turbo runs to £2,000+ (plus VAT)
And thats without anything major being replaced.

How do you mean 'owns'?
And I doubt very much that the expenses originated from his own back pocket, even if he does have a vested interest in Evo magazine, I am sure he has beneficial advantages to running a supercar through a business such as Evo.

Hmm,
I would believe that entirely. The only thing putting me off is running costs. Considering Harry Metcalfe wasn't even paying for the bills and still he was complaining, it seems pretty scary.
I feel sorry for whoever bought that car though.

Cem,
Yes it's sobering reading (but not so sobering as his previous "end of term" report on his (2nd) Maserati Ghibli Cup....depreciationsville....)
Harry owns Evo (or did, 'til he sold it this month) ~ 993 was HIS car ~ presume therefore that he DID pay the bills....

Why not try a 964 RS before you buy a 993 turbo? I had a passenger ride in one on a great road and it's an awesome car - you can pick up a good one LHD for 26-27k, RHD for 5-6k more. It would be a great introduction to 911 driving and should hold value better than the turbo.
I think you'd struggle to find a good LHD 911 turbo for under 40k, let alone 30-35, and RHD ones will be 7-10k more. Then you have the large servicing bills etc. Go for it if you don't mind splashing out, but I think the 964RS provides better thrills per £££ spent and your bank manager will still speak to you

Isn't the 964RS horribly compromised as a road car, with rock solid suspension and a snatchy oversteer character? Wasn't it described as "bloody dangerous" (or words to that effect) in the old Performance Car road test or PCOTY awards?

Could be, but I did get driven in one at 100-120mph round sweeping corners on the B660 which is about as challenging a road as you'll get. The ride was hard but perfectly acceptable IMO, and the car felt extremely secure & planted on the road at speed, more so than a standard Impreza. The driver slid the tail mildly a couple of times and it didn't feel dangerous at all. He did say that when the rear does go, you have to be quite quick to catch it, but you would have to be driving like a nutter or deliberately provoke it for this to happen from what I saw.
Anyway, if you are looking at a 911, I'd say you HAVE to test drive a 964RS. If it's too raw/uncompromising/"dangerous" for you, fair enough, but lots of people love old-school 911 and in that case I think the RS would be a strong contender.
