I am sure fuzz can recommend something for cleaning, I think you shouldn't use a steel wire brush or wool as you might leave steel residue on the Al. Fine emery cloth is probably good, as is scotch brite (scouring pad).

There is also some chemical you can use to just prep the surface, something slightly acidic I think. I don't think dipping it in liquid freon is very practical.

Cleaners Hmmmmm.
welll thinners does a good job of removing residue, oils greases etc,
but to remove oxidised surface layer you need a file or similar.
Abrasive wheels and the such like tend to leave thier abrasive particles stuck in the base metal.
perhaps a die grinder with a metal toothed cutter !
I would get you a piccy of what I mean but I'm off work with a chest infection....(at least a week) ;(

Use WD40 while cutting, and clean it out with a good stiff wire brush now and again.

Right... the time has come... Im fooking pissed off with this car... After fitting an APS to p20spd's its given me some ideas...

I am toying with the idea of buying a new core (as mine has that hole in it which didnt repair too well..) and putting the rad back to the std location.. and cutting the bumper....

Ideas on a postcard before i just buy a fmic... (I really need to hear this car run... and in time for well lane 3)

Right silly suggestion, why dont you get 2 tmic and mount the at the front on theie edge, side by side/ontop of one another, just link them up?

it may work or just use your tmic at the front for now?

Ahhh... not so fooking daft after all!!! maybe you could stand them on an end. Ok suppose Andy is probably combining it with something els. But FFS 2 would get you working for well lane, you can use my TMIC so lang as you dont "adjust" it for well lane.

Let me know.

couple of allow pipes at an angle and a bit of samco and sorted

Thumbs up

Andy, twin turbos would work well with twin i/c's

The other reason for twin i/c's was a cheap upgrade in place of a proper FMIC kit (not that your diy job isn't proper in any way David ). I think we discussed this a while ago, you could have one in original position and the other at the front in series or parallel. Or 2 at the front ala Andy.

On sizing it up, one at the front (std TMIC from a MY99) does fit nicely and you'd just need some tubes.

Cool

Dave,
You've spent ages doing this and done it on a budget, which admitidely has now gone out the window thanks to the welder, so isn't it worth finishing off just to show what can be done with a bit of imagination and some hard graft.
I for one would like to see it finished in the spirit of the original idea.
If it doesn't give the results you want then you can always look at an off the shelf jobby then.

Just my 2p

Steve

Im not junking it... I have been thinking about the best way of getting it done... if you remember a while ago I dropped it and put a hole in the core... We tried fixing this with alloy solder, tig welding etc, and it isnt worth it... the IC only cost 30...

However having never seen the fmic kits.. Until I fitted one with p20spd.. I didnt realise how easy they fit behind the bumpers... so... I Want to put my radiator back to the std position.. (less work with hoses... Less chance of ripping the bottom off 2" higher)

This then leaves more room for the pipe to go under... and then between cam cover and rad...

However I am just going to try and buy some cores... And probably do similar to andy... (Andy did you do it with two just incase)

I can I just get one core running left to right and get the same cooling??

The whole project has changed from a fmic project anyway... If I could edit the title then I would..

Its been:

Fuel Pump
Pressure Reg
Custom Rails - Even though these are being binned for phase 2 rails.
Parallel Feed Rails
Reverse Inlet Manifold.
Move Alternator..
Fit Nitrous
Modify a HKS DownPipe
How to Port Your Headers..

The main part of this was to reverse the inlet... and unlike andy Im not in a hurry to finish the car (or wasnt)

Now I am... so I need to be realistic.. Ie Get a new intercooler.. and reconsider where it goes... Ill run at well lane without a bumper if necessary...

David
