The cotton buds trick sounds like the towel trick. Unfortunately, both have limited success. as does the Xclamp fix. I did it on mine and it lasted a few weeks, then died again.
Sorry to p1ss on your chips, guys.

I would get shot of it ASAP mate, before it gives up the ghost again. What trade in can you get against a new one? I have a new one and I think the problems were mostly ironed out.

mine is weird as i've had it a few years, always worked perfect until i stopped playing with it 6-8 months ago. 2nd time i used it the RROD came on?
I don't spend hours on it so it doesn't get too hot
might have to ebay it while it's still working and buy a new 1?
so are the later slim ones ok or do they have faults as well?

Have you tried the cotton buds trick?
Mine played up last week with the 3 rings and after seeing the cotton bud trick on youtube i thought i'd try it - it worked
take 2 cotton buds, remove cotton from end of each, stick buds into the fans on the back of the xbox to stop the fans from spinning, switch on xbox, wait 3-4 mins until 2 rings are still showing, switch off xbox until it's cooled down, switch on 5 mins later and it should be working
not sure how long this fix lasts but it's still working for mine

what causes the problem is the board warps with heat over time and when it is played for a while or on a power hungry game the solder gets soft and the warped board pulls away from the chip.
next time you turn it on it wont work cos its all cooled down and the chip pins are not in contact with the board, getting the xbox to overheat melts the solder again and makes the contacts.
the main problem is the chips get too hot, i fixed mine by removing the x clamp and just using screws to hold the chip
