Another nice car, however dont think it will be quick enough after the STI. I need something as quick but refined.

Been looking at 07+ M5's Just too much cash. Wife prefers M5 looks. I love the idea of the DMS remapped RS6 with an aftermarket exhaust. Will be around 5k cheaper and dare I say it more stealthy.

VXR8. Looked at them, Just think if I went for one I would only be sorry and wish I gone M5 or RS6. It is going to be test drive I think for each and see where work is taking me with regards to contract.

Thanks for all response.

I have both a 2004 RS6+ Avant and a heavily modified HSV R8 (VXR8), so I can comment from experience.

The Audi is a fab car, but I must warn you that they are expensive to run. Engines are reliable, but gearboxes can be problematic if mistreated and not maintained (£5k+ to replace). DRC fails on all cars, but is rubbish anyway and is best replaced with coilovers and uprated ARBs which transform the car. Discs wear through very quickly and cost £300 a corner. Fuel consumption is to be expected. I average 19mpg, down to 10-12mpg urban, and 25mpg on the motorway. Servicing is expensive, minor is £250+ and major (cambelt etc) about £1500+.

Plus points
- Sound of the 40valves with a Miltek (awesome)
- Acceleration and torque (esp. with a remap)
- Huge AWD grip
- Decent handling for size (with coilies & ARBs)
- Nice interior (Real carbon, Recaro, toys)
- Tons of room (Avant)
- Solidity (feels like it's hewn from granite)

Negatives
- Running costs
- Lack of steering feel
- Cost of parts
- Dated exterior (C5 shape came out in 1997)
- Autobox

On to the HSV. After years of Rally replicas, I wanted a proper large V8, but was fed up with the usual germanic suspects that you see every day. Considered a Mustang, but didn't fancy LHD and then drove the R8.

Initial impressions were ok, but not amazing. Lovely noise, if a little subdued, loads of space, lots of NA torque, not much traction, pretty good handling, with quick-ish steering and some feel. The rear felt soft and underdamped, which turned out to be a combination of poor damping and soft sub frame bushes. Gearchange was heavy, slow and ponderous, but clutch light. Interior was well put together, but with cheap materials and scratchy plastics - to be expected from a GM car after all. What it does have is character, which is what sold it for me -driving it is an experience every time and you never tire of that, even though it's not the fastest or most capable car on the road, it's bags of fun and the noise is something else.

After good experiences with modding previous cars, I decided that the car had potential, so I bought it and went through a long list of mods until I was happy:

- Coilovers

- ARBs

- Chasis braces

- Strut brace

- Full poly bushes

- Full 3" exhaust

- Headers

- Quickshift

- Remap

End result, a large saloon with as much room as an S-Class, 500bhp/lb ft, that handles very well for its weight, sounds amazing and has more character than most cars this side of £100K. I've had mine 15 months and I've never seen another on the road. The amount of people that come up to you scratching their heads and asking what it is is hilarious.

And best of all, I don't have to get involved in any of the car snobbery that is so rife in this country. The car is completely isolated from the usual badge/image nonsense that most cars carry. HSV - what's that?

Remember I said 'character', not better or faster. I think most of what are considered 'the best' cars these days are very efficient and good at what they do, but lack the level of character that gets them under your skin. But at the end of the day what defines character is a very personal thing and is impossible to quantify or agree on, so no point in a 'what is character' debate.

I have no doubt, but not because the car is crap. I think too many people are concerned with being seen with the right badge to ever consider a GM sourced car which is a shame.

The immediate sneer and snigger that have been generated because the car happens to be sold as a Vauxhall kinda says it all. Sad really, but that's life...

The VXR for buying and running costs is very good.
The RS6 good alround car.
The M5. I think they are a very good car, But would not want to be in the.

My research has lead me to believe that the VXR8 is exactly what Martin describes. It is not technically as good a car as it's German rivals. But for that, turn around and feel good as you walk away thing....it trounces them all.

Bez, you are either 12 years old (though I'd be p1ssed off if a 12 year old child of mine had spelling as poor as yours) or have learning difficulties. Or perhaps you are 12 years old with learning difficulties?
