I'm sorry, but there is no way in hell an e60 dash is more dated than the old V8 bi-turbo RS6. That RS6 dash looks dog-sh*t old IMHO - I mean, the sat nav screen is about the size of a ipod screen!

LCI e60 is much improved, especially as the ditched those stupid curving door handles.

Thanks for all your input guys, it is appreciated. Obviously the lower the mileage the better for each car, and although it pains me I might even have to go to Main dealers for the best warranty cover. I know it proves a little more expensive but I just feel more comfortable that way. RS6 might be difficult to source though I have always believed aftermarket warranties are not worth the paper they are printed on. Might be wrong though. Had a bad experience myself back in the 90s. Sure things may have changed since?

Ddongler that M5 is beautiful, a lovely example you have there. Can I ask what the fuel consumption is like around town. Just out of interest that is, before people say "If you have to ask about fuel then you shouldnt be blah blah blah". The car will do lots of short journeys and be used for the school run, so just wondering if it will be worse than the Impreza. That is getting around 200 to the tank at the moment, without booting it anywhere.

RS6 to me looks, although possibly a little dated is a definitely future classic car and if it goes as well as it looks then I think it might sway it. Cheaper too. So 15k car 1k Milltek Plus remap and any other consumable upgrades it might need then will still work out cheaper than M5. Not sure the Mrs will approve of the older car though.

Gadget wise I am not to fussed more the driving experience.

MMM I really dont know. Will be out test driving in January and will have a better idea then. But for now thanks for everyones input, and I am open to more.

Cheers

Sean

good luck with what you decide to go for but bear in mind that if the car you buy doesnt have a warranty you wont be able to buy a main dealer warranty

Big head. Just seen yours and that is a tidy M5 too. Is the exhaust an aftermarket system? Do you have any audio of the noise? Cheers

To be honest Lou, I expect to be in a similar situation to you with a similar budget fairly soon. For long enough I wanted an M5, but I really don't want a £23k M5. I think the RS6 is too old an so I lean heavily towards the Vauxhall VXR8.

Don't let the name put you off the VXR8 is entirely designed and built by Holden, all Vauxhall did is slap a badge on it and sell in through their network. It doesn't have same equipment as it's German rivals but it has a 425bhp V8 in LS3 from and you can buy 2007 low mileage LS2 (412bhp) examples for as little as £16k.

Notable omissions are heated wing mirrors, heated seats and underseal. Underseal is easy enough to solve but this just highlights some of the issues of buying an Aus car. In terms of size and practicality it is the measure of an M5 and with a Wortec exhaust it sounds insane. An over the radiator cold air induction kit and a remap will see you with around 440bhp and you can get over 500bhp fairly easily without going forced induction. Supercharged ones run 530bhp+

I haven't driven one yet, but if I like it I'd probably view it as a natural step between the my ST220 and an M5.

BMW won't do a free software update (there is an hour and a half profit in it for them)
However, if you know people (like me!!) an update can be had for £80.00
The steering on an m5 is servotronic, so it will feel soft and snuggly when pottering about, but the taut and direct when "M" mode is active.
The M5 isn't perfect but, for the ammount that are out there, i don't see that many with big issues.
Rough guess on mpg the E60 m5 will give about 14-15mpg around town, 20-22mpg on the motorway.

M5 for me it is such an awesome car and for me looks fantastic too, RS6 looks dull.

VXR8/Monaro is a good shout though for something different.

each to their own i suppose I'd rather have something slightly dated but that stands out from the crowd rather than a car that looks like every other 520d m sport on the road

RS6 doesn't stand out though...to joe average it looks a lot like any other s-line diesel Audi. I think the RS6 is a great car but it is old now and is showing its age...much like the e46 M3 IMHO.

it looks nothing like an A-line Diesel, for a start the massive flared wheel arches are a giveaway as are the bigger front and rear bumpers.Thats what makes it stand out from other cars. Its like saying the 22B doesnt stand out from the crowd as it looks like every other 2 door classic

My point is the M5 has no exterior differences to every other 5 series apart from the quad pipes/rear apron

Out of interest have you considered an M3 CSL? or are 4 doors a must? only the M3 CSL looks far better than an M5 and being a track based car will out perform an M5 all day long except on long motorway runs. They are in your 23k budget wheras the better 07 onwards M5s arent. That is assuming you are going BMW route.Just avoid pre 07 M5s as they will cost you the earth to maintain

ok should have said M sport model rather than generalising.I owned a 535d M Sport which was identical externally (and mostly interior) to an M5 apart from the quad pipes everything was the same.
As i said its all down to personal preferences and everyones will differ but i think the M5 looks plain and boring and like every other 'M Sport ' on the road Put some 19s on them and no one would know the difference

M5 is totally obvious compared to a cooking M Sport 5er unless you are blind. Very very cool but understated.

M Sports don't look anything like "proper" M cars. M Sport stuff is basically overpriced chavving that does nothing to make the car faster. It's also "pretend" M car stuff yet gets lapped up by 1000s wanting to make their 318d looks like an M3 or 520d like an M5.

The brainwashing is so extensive that despite 1000s of M Sport alloys cracking through spindly/puny design, M Sport zombies still insist on 19" cracking specials then moan when their wheels fall to bits.

To those vaguely in the know - M Sport = a bit gay, M cars = dead cool.

Same with S-Line sh1te.

Random rant over.

I'd go for the M5. RS6 weighs too much, breaks down a lot and is getting long in the tooth. Lovely engine though that woofles very nicely. Prefer that model to the current one too.

Mattee the M5 and RS6 weigh the virtually the same give or take 10kg),Pre 07 M5 are far more fragile than C5 RS6 and breaks down a lot more

Agree about the engine though, sounds loads better than the v10

What is the problem with pre 07? Why would it cost more to maintain. Obviously they are a little older but mileage comes into play surely?

Are there Gremlins that were ironed out post 07?

Scooby TC RS6 looks beautiful. They do look a bit basic, but that is what I like about them, the subtle hints of what they are capable of. Reference those twin tail pipes, it just say's it all to me. Mega! Are they aftermarket and do you have any sound audio for the system?

cheers.

PS My name is Sean, Lou is my wife but I use this account.

Ref CSL. No good! Have 3 kids and want to just run one car. At times I think of just keeping the Impreza. The major problem is though, the rattles and little annoyances break me so I need something more solid.

because in 07 they changed to an LCI engine which had small tweaks mainly to do with emissions but they also ironed out a few issues with the earlier models. They also changed the lights and made minor refinements to the interior.Gearboxes are still dire though

My tail pipes are Miltek as is the rest of the system, the standard looks similar in shape but slightly smaller.I havent got any Audio of the pipes but i can get one a bit later on if you like, but if you look on you tube for RS6 bi-turbo miltek there are plenty on there

ROLF, it's obviously subjective, but IMHO you are way, way, way wrong...and my mate has a minter e46 m3. Every time I see it I just think it looks gash now.

M5 is a very imposing car IMHO and I think the e60 looks absolutely fantastic from the outside (and not bad inside). Yes the M5 additions are subtle but the overall shape and design was light years ahead when it was penned.

I own neither an M5 nor an RS6 and I have no brand loyalty between the two (I love both BWM and Audi). However, DD's car looks far better in my eyes, both inside and out. I don't say that to be cruel or to belittle your car - it's an awesome piece of machinary...but in my view it doesn't look dramatically different from the design of my uncles Audi A4 I used to borrow when I was 20....I'm now 33!!
