I have also taken out some programmes but struggle to know what I actually need and what some programmes actually do. What the hell is Safari for example? And I have WINFAST slowing things up when I start up - I have taken this out before but is has re-appeared

And I still want to know what is wrong with using CTRL/ALT/DEL

WINFAST is either your graphics driver, or a TV Tuner driver.

You will almost certainly want to keep that running.

You only ever need basic background functions to be running for the PC to be happy. These are both programs and services.

These will be drivers, for graphics, sound etc.

I assume you are looking in the msconfig.exe to see what items are running at startup.

Its difficult to know what the PC will require to be happy if you do not know what your looking at.

Here is an example of a clean statup. Notice that there are few entries

entries such as hkcmd and rundll32 are system files and are required. The other entries bar the PcSync2 are drivers, or driver related programs.

The above gives you an idea as to what you should be aiming for.

Of course if there is programs that you use regularly, then you might want these to be running in the back ground ready for use.

BTW, Safari is a web browser from Apple.

Kaspersky another 300 or 400
HOW MUCH!!!!!??? (I presume you mean meg)

Seriously David, if that is megabytes, then that is an absolutely huge about RAM for an antivirus program to hog.

Looking at my PC now, which uses nod32 for antivirus, its using 4meg (4032k) for the antivirus program.

If you want to show a snapshot of your desktop you will need to use the print screen key. Or use a program to do it.

Without a program is easy and free!

Have what you want to make a snapshot of in the forefront of your desktop. Hold down the CTRL key and then press the PrtScn (Print Screen) key.

This will now have taken a snapshot of your desktop and put it in your clip board.

Now open an image program such as Microsoft Paint, then choose Edit, then click Paste. Now an image of your desktop will appear.

Save the image as a JPG, and upload it to somewhere like Photobucket and use the link to post in forums.

David, her indoors was trying to do Powerpoint, Excel and Word whilst being virus protected and the PC ground to a halt.

A £200 dual core machine will feel like an STI compared to your invalid carriage...

Please upgrade before it dies on you.

Probably scare-mongering BUT you will find that some viruses/malware/bad things will prevent you from updating your anti virus software or installing a malware removal program.

One way of stopping a program from running is by using the three fingers of death (ALT, CTRL + DEL). when you mentioned that your computer didn't react to this my suspicious nature assumed that this may be because you had a nasty program blocking this function in a desperate act of self preservation.

I'm sure I'm wrong though

Last time I had a virus like that, task manager would open then instantly close.

Proof if it is a problem will be by going to "start--->run" then type "taskmgr" and click ok.

If that doesn't work either....erm, oh dear.

Avira is good and very efficient anti-virus(i have before AVG,but AVG don't recognize root kit and Rogue Viruses).
As above download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware check for any malware,spyware....

Stuff all this hokey pokey windows + virus checker shoite and try out Ubuntu with no virus checker

Works wonders on older equipment, i run it on a single core 2ghz desktop with 1gb ram, and a 800mhz thinkpad laptop with 384mb ram.

Laptop runs like garbage on XP nowadays with all the extra bloat and service packs.
