My experiences of the Firemen (at least round here) are that they are useless.

My wife had a tree get hit by lightning and land on her car, despite the fire engine being there quite quickly it was members of the public who took charge of the situation ... the firemen and firegirls were stood around awaiting the arrival of their 'boss' before they did anything!

I arrived a few minutes after the event only to see them completely unorganised .... spending too much time discussing Health and Safety to be any good - a chocolate teapot comes to mind!

And to think they are paid £32k for doing bu99er all is annoying!

Now I don't know about you, but I'm happy in the knowledge that there are teams of emergency service personel sitting ready for action if I ever need them - not knackered because they've been busy all day.

Anyway, its about time that we binned "bonfire night" anyway anywhere other than in organised displays

You are getting more crabby than I was with a raging toothache!

Its both of course, its a paid job and they have a duty to save lives and put fires out!

I treat it the same as being in the Forces. Yet again a paid job and the deal is that if you do go to war you are expected to risk your life as well of course. When you are not actually risking your life you spend the time training to do all that sort of thing more effectively!

I have of course had a good deal of experience of life up to 2010 and it serves my personal judgement pretty well I reckon.

9 / 15 how it is now
11 / 13 how they propose to make it

about 5600 have refused to sign and are facing the sack, and thats what its all about

Health & Safety rules seem to prevent Firefighters from risking their own lives to save others.

As mentioned in post above they're striking because they're being sacked for not changing their contracted hours.
