I've just read a dozen inaccurate statements there already.
That really doen't sound like a mapping issue.
Before blaming anyone you need to establish exactly what went wrong.
No one may be to blame, on the basis that machinery sometimes just lets you down.
It sounds like a valve failure from the way you're describing it.
A valve can only fail in that way due to a fracture between the head and the stem, or parting company with the retaining collets, and dropping into the cylinder. I would expect that to be an inlet valve issue, as gravity helps keep the exhaust valve in place if that occurs. Either event is certainly unusual, although not impossible.
Carefully examining what occurred might help lead to the answer.
If you feel the urge to send over some detailed pictures of the damage, I might be able to enlighten you. No charge of course!

Yeah, I thought busted inlet valve dropping into the chamber. Could be a one off failure, or it could have been that the original valve had a slight bend that was missed on engine build.

A bent valve will straighten and rebend every time it opens and shuts and they will only do that for so long before the head falls off. Once that happens the insides will look like a hand grenade has gone off in there.

New block, 1 rod, set of pistons, 1 cylinder head, several valves, Bearings, gaskets and seals. Total rebuild time again I reckon.

Tough luck mate, lets see what the inspection brings up, but I seriously doubt any engineer will be able to give a definite answer from the remains, It will have to be an educated guess.

David and Alan,
Thanks for your replies. I'm being told that I need all new rods and pistons, crank, block and one head. I'm told it's not worth the risk of rebuilding with the 3 other rods because I don't know if they have been damaged?!

Update:

Saw the engine stripped today and piston 3 is properly chewed up. I'm no expert but I have no reason to doubt what i'm being told (especially after David and Alan's comments) that the valve broke and dropped into the chamber. I trust the builder/mapper used hence I have not dropped names or try to point fingers, just trying to do my own research and learn from it.

I am absolutely gutted as you can imagine. It couldn't have happened at a worse time. I'm in the middle of a house purchase and i'm absolutely skint. I've been offered 4K to re-build as a 2.1 stoker but I simply can't afford it!

I think i'm going to cut my losses and sell up! Question is how much is my car worth in its present state? Or buy a cheap engine get it running and flog it?

What's the going rate for a 97 sti V3 in white, with simtek & antilag, AP brakes and a fecked forge engine?? Not a lot I'm thinking. Anyone want to sell me a cheap engine......

Sti valves are hollow stem and are as weak as a weak thing. So they bend easily and then straighten as the spring pulls it into the seat, then bend back as the pressure releases. At 6000 rpm that is happening 3000 times a minute or 50 times a second....................

The guide is chrome moly steel it won't even notice.

Guess how long it lasts once that starts happening?

I feel for you

Get some pictures of the car up here .... people are always looking for the next project..... you can at least get all your options on the table if someone offers you some cash for it.

Try not to be offended by the cheaptards. They are everywhere.

Wrxmad, is that a straightforward swop into a classic and could I still use my existing simtek?

i would take a step back look at what its worth to you a good used long block can be had for about 700 quid plus say 300 quid to fit then you will need it mapped so theres another 250 or like you said about 4 grand to get a forged 2.1 stroker built or you have a 3rd option as i have seen afew forged engines in the for sale section for 1500 quid what ever you deside to do i feel sorry for you and hope im never in the same situation
