its not a bad rule tbh

actually I replaced the right hand intercooler the other day - A4 2.5 TDI's have two FMIC believe it or not - it had a massive hole in it (an absolute ar3e of a job)

and boy what a difference, I think it was running under a 100bhp and was developing no boost before I changed it

now it pulls sooo much better - different car (but still a boring audi)

I think thats why I got a deal on it -- as I am sure the guy who sold it to me know something was not right

I had a crushingly dull thought this morning as a petrol 106 with a blown exhaust went past - what does a diesel sound like with a blown exhaust?! Presumably pretty bad?!

I had a blast yesterday to Penryn and back. Grinning from ear to ear the whole way. Was behind a Ford GT40 (an original one - or a very good replica) yesterday with a stunning sounding V8. Must have been a bit off tune because I kept up on the two lane section past Asda - and yes, he really was hammering the poor old car. I only really kept up to hear the soundtrack - yes I am one of those that drops a window just to hear a nice engine noise as it goes past...

I wonder how many twin exhaust cars only use one of the pipes? Mine uses both because I get slight soot (!) deposits on both exhausts. Easy to clean off.

True mattee I was behind a 335d yesterday and black smoke was coming out both exhausts when accelerating. This is the one thing that puts me off diesels aswell as the engine note.

Jim - AFAIK there is a device for removing soot deposits/clouds in the 335d - no idea what it is though but seen it mentioned a few times. I get a tiny amount of blacking on the bottom of the exhausts every 1000 miles or so - but it's virtually invisible to all but the geekiest eye.

Drive one - they honestly sound reasonable when pushed hard. Crap on idle but like some sort of racing truck when hammered. They rev quickly too.

Our 535d doesn't smoke, and it's done nearly 70,000 miles now. On the other hand, our Golf GTi PD150 Anniversary smokes something terrible.

Some do, some don't.

one of the tell tale signs of my blown FMIC was clouds of soot, on even moderate acceleration – it actually got a bit embarrassing

and the whole rear end of the car would get black in a week or two

all good now though

on a diesel -- black soot is unburnt fuel -- if i remember correctly

I'm sure all 35d engined BMWs have something to prevent (or seriously reduce) the soot emissions. My Ashtray was fine for 30k miles then became a bit of a soot flinger.

My inlaws X5 3.0d is terrible for soot - any kickdown and most of the county goes cloudy and sometimes it even rains.

I'm on a whisker over 20k miles now and haven't noticed any smoke at all. In fact it's most disconcerting at times - hammer around like a loon with no smoke, then switch off and no fans or "ticking" whatsover. I know diesels run cooler but it does seem weird at times. Normal though.

Often smoke is a sign of a failing MAF.

Look at a lot of Ford and Jag diesel cars. They appear to have straight exhausts like a normal petrol car, but look closer! The real pipe bends down towards the ground.

not quite a bad as the aftermarket wheel trims that try and convince you that the Saxo next to you has 17" AP Racing disc brakes not Drums on his rear wheels

Car's got a buckled wheel - needs replacing and the new wheel won't be in 'til Monday

Still - good to know they find the problems and I get a brand new wheel out of it (as well as the 4 new tyres)

I had some issues with my car near the end of ownership.
Actually the smoking that was habitual in those cars (and many others) was one of the reasons it was sold.

Nowadays with closed loop DPFs, there is no more black smoke.

Thank God!

I got the A4, and it's a great car to drive. Only I now have an A6 on the drive as the A4 has had to go back because:

Tracking is out
Steering wheel is off-centre (see above)
Tick over is high (I think... what IS the tickover for a 3.0TDi?)
Bleeding hole in the drivers carpet (I mean... come on)
The most annoying rattle coming from the rear seat middle arm rest that is continual when going above 60... you have no idea how bad this is
Fresh scratches in the paint work on the offside rear wheel arch.

<sigh>

Well it's all getting done and I've found a couple of good remappers to go to when I get the car back

In the meantime I have this A6. With a button for a handbrake. I kid you not. How the hell do you do a hill start when you have to press the FOOT brake to release the handbrake?

I guess this is why I went to a main dealer - if things are wrong; they HAVE to fix it.

Annoying though.

Still - I did Darlington and back on Thursday (the day it went back) and averaged 50.6mpg for the 280 mile round trip. I wasn't trying for economy I just cruised up.

You don't have to push the foot brake to release... just drive away and the handbrake will release itself.

Kieran - oh darn.

Had a couple of very minor issues with mine (rattle in the rear, intercooler pipe replaced, new NSR puddle light LED, stuck middle rear seatbelt) but all done without quibbles under warranty.

Hope yours hasn't been pranged? I got mine for such a good price that I half convinced myself if must have been in an accident (or similar!) for a while - it hasn't!

BMW 750i has a push button handbrake - very weird.

Oh, everything is being done under warranty - or more accurately Sales of Goods Act (as in it should be as advertised: Like buying new) I don't have a problem really. It's just frustrating that I have to wait. It's all I seem to be doing at the moment (waiting for House sale to complete, waiting to see if I can get the property I want, waiting to see what the hell I am doing at work....)

Aaaanyway.

Yup you don't have to fart around you can just drive off. I think Audi are trying to remove the driver from driving step by step:

No need to release the handbrake, just drive off
No need to turn on the lights, they can do that for you
No need to turn OFF the lights - see above
No need to worry about rain, wipers come on automatically
No need to worry about throttle control - set the cruise control
Turning 'round a bend - the aux lights on that side come on and light up the front qtr.

I think I'll just climb in the back next time I want to go somewhere and see what happens.

No need to dip the windscreen mirror either.
Or change gear.
What year is it BTW? B8 shape?
