Default Audi A4 3.0 TDi S-Line - Good idea?

Looking at my next car and keep coming back to this one... not new - got about £16K to spend so looking at an 06 ish one.

Anyone got any hints / tips on what to look for? Or do I avoid altogether (so alternatives would be good to hear about)

Cheers all

Never had one but i think these look much better than the BMW 330d that most would go for- also the Audi not as common as the BMW!

Having driven a front wheel drive A6 2.7 tdi recently. They have very bad torque steer when accelerating hard. If you're thinking of getting a high powered diesel make sure its 4 wheel or rear wheel drive.

Kieran - had a very similar spec in mind and similar budget. Mrs Matt preferred the look of them to the 3 series - I phoned around, the dealers were cr4p so I did some geeking 330d vs 3.0TDI A4 - the BMW was lighter, better on fuel, much lower emissions, more powerful, more torque, all tests were very good (many think the 3.0DTI is lifeless and dull to drive), etc, etc so was about to buy a 330d then luckily found a bargain 335d. BMW is also "current" shape. A4 is B7. Wife was soon convinced and it's now on the driveway.

Unless you REALLY want 4WD and the Audi interior is essential, the BMW wins every time.

It's the 4-wheel drive that's the killer for me - my last two cars have been and I'm a convert

Although I can be persuaded if someone finds a similar 335d

(thanks for the insight A & M)

KB - I was after 4WD too but it's very rare I actually need it.

BMWs are pure comedy in any snow though...!

same functional requirements for me when i replaced my scooby earlier this year

4x4 a must really, or at the least rwd and 100% had to be an oil burner

so it was an Audi Quattro or a BMW 320d or 330d, I think that the BMW is probably the better car on most measures

but I just couldn,t drag myself away from 4x4 -- so bought a A4 2.5TDI Quattro

No, forget about a test drive and rely on the opinion of a host of partisan Internet keyboard warriors. It's the Scoobynet way

But some of us do actually own or have owned the cars in the discussion. The trick is to find out the ones that have and the ones making it up. I have rumbled many an internet car forum warrior claiming to have a 911/GTR/whatever...

Audis not as common as BMWs? Many would dispute that in recent times. What is all the fuss about with Audis? Nice interior but what else? I drove an S4 once, it was duller than a 330d. I'm not pro-BMW either but a remapped 330d would win the day for me here as I wouldn't want the auto-only 335d.

Pre 2006 A4 3.0TDI - 201bhp, 2006-2008 - 229bhp
Current model - 236bhp.

Current BMW 330d - 241bhp, pre 08 - 227bhp

335d - 286bhp - MWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!! And beats a manual 335i around Bruntingthorpe (by 0.1 second!!). £16k isn't quite going to get one unless it has silly miles.

I'd say 2005/6ish mid miler 330d or similar age A4 3.0TDI. S-Line is a bit like M Sport - niceish looking but not really very useful. Just makes the ride rock hard and is basically upmarket chavving. IMO only of course.

Well - I went for the A4 3.0 TDi (talk about fully loaded... even the Audi salesman wasn't sure of some of the buttons!)

Now does anyone know of a good place to get a remap?

He's mainly a BMW man but will remap most things. I've never heard anything negative about Simon, he remapped my old 330d earlier this year and he is far cheaper than some of the alternatives as he offers a mobile service, cutting down on his own overheads.

not got it yet

getting 4 new tyres fitted and some minor scuffs (including a wheel refurb) sorted in the bodyshop.

First time I have ever gone to main dealer for a car and have to say the peace of mind of great!

Saturday is the big day. I'm going to put a trip to Darlington off until next week so I can take the car on a long drive (and save money while I'm at it! Okay... make MORE money on the expenses ) to see what it's like.

Kieran - very very exciting - I had a week of torture and that was bad enough.
Be keen to see the spec - assume full Bose and all that? One thing I'd change/upgrade is the hifi - it's not bad but Audi Bose is better.

It's full BOSE Once I've got the list I'll post it up (with a photo or 4) It's even debadged... so the only way you know it's not your run of the mill A4 is the twin exhausts

Ha ha - be sure to burn off those 2.0TDIs with their pointless twin exhausts...!

I have made up my own rule - less than 200bhp = not allowed twin pipes.
