Well, what with your broken camshaft, it gives you the 'excuse' to seriously consider building a forged motor... and going for the 2.5 would be just awesome!
I'd go fot it, personally - why not seize upon the opportunity to turn your bad luck into something good?!
It may be painful financially at first, but a few months' worth of disposable income later will soon smooth things over. Well that.. and the massive adrenaline rush delivered by that effortless 2.5L torque!...

Hoot! (got an image of the Duracell bunny!)
Oh yeah, that couple! The ***** though... having that photo taken with the date in the corner! They'd've possibly gotten away with it had it not been for that! Can't believe they went to all that meticulous detail to devise that 'no-stone-unturned' watertight rouse... only for their 'vanity' to, ultimately, undo all their efforts! They must be smarting big time.
I can't get over the fact that the 'deceased' husband would go through that false door and into a room next door when anybody visited, for - what was it - 10 years or so?!!!
The cranks! (pun there).

What a day, removed both cylinder heads and the oil pump.
Todays bonus fault ?
Right hand side exhaust camshaft is cracked (probably at the same time as the cam pulleys were broken at a guess ?)
So if anyone has a suitable replacement to sell or donate please let me know !
Still agonising over what to do, new V9 crank and bearings runs at about £570, this seems like overkill if I am going to re-use my pistons and rods.
Can buy a new 2.5 STi short motor for about £1500 and fit that ?
Decisions, decisions !!!!!

It is not something that I would recommend even running around steadily for running in and map later, because of the fuel / air thing potentially causing weakness of mixture etc. etc.,
The cam is broken because of the "clumsy gang" that battered the pulleys. I'd be asking the fitting garage for some sort of contribution.
What a nightmare this is.

PS £570 for new crank and bearings is very competitive. I can better it slightly for you, call if I can help.

Did warn you of that in post #70 - but hope you get it sorted whichever route you decide to go down to get it back on the road again

Thanks guys.
If I go down the replacement crankshaft route I will give you a call David.
Budget to do it properly keeps growing !
£1400 for new 2.5 sti short motor, £130 for new modine, £120 for new oil pump, gaskets ?
Then it occured to me that it might make sense to fit forged pistons before the engine goes in, just in case I want to go for 400+ bhp later !
Another £600 fitted !
This is getting very, very silly, the car is worth the square root of f**k all (as we say in the trade) !
Can someone explain why I am considering this for even a split second ?
I just can't bear the thought of breaking it for bits or bodging it up to sell.

Had a letter today from the company that supplied the engine, they are offering to collect the car and repair the 'malfunctioning' engine !
I am reluctant to accept their offer, what happens if they damage the car in transit, go bust whilst my car is with them or decide to hold me to ransom to get the car back by saying the engine failure is caused by something not covered by their warranty ?
Obviously I don't have a great degree of confidence in their abilities due to the fact that,
a) They lied in their advert about the components that had been replaced and the reconditioning process.
and
b) The engine failed after three weeks.
I have initiated a 'Paypal' dispute to recover my money, just wonder if this offer is to appear 'reasonable' when 'Paypal' start to investigate matters ?
Any input much appreciated !

Al i bloody hope is that you get your money back or a good working engine been following this thread for a while now and I really feel for ya! have been in the same situation with my old renault 5 turbo! NIGHTMARE !

Very tempted to tell them to take a flying f**k at a rolling donut ! (in the nicest possible sense of course)
No further progress on the block today, actually had to do my 'real' job !
Back on the case tomorrow though, need to disconnect pistons from the con rods and split the block.
Cover me ! I'm going in............................

Sweet baby Jesus and the orphans !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Managed to split the block today, bearings are pretty chewed up but one set of big end bearings have completely disintegrated !
I kid you not, other than some huge blobs of silvery sludge in the sump there is nothing left of them !
I am toying with a new theory regarding the bottom end failure.
When I removed the spark plugs the guys at work examined them and commented 'holy s**t, how rich was this running ?'
I decatted the car not long after I got it and ran without a remap.
I'm wondering if it has been running so rich that unburnt fuel has been mixing with the oil and 'diluting' it for want of a better word ?
I would guess that this would seriously compromise the oils ability to lubricate / protect the engine ?
Crank has marks / scoring on the journals so guessing it is FUBAR'd.
I am only rebuilding this engine as a bit of a project if I can get a decent replacement crank and bearings into it cheapish.
Still awaiting the outcome of my refund battle with the supplier of the 'recon' engine to determine how much I spend on the 'proper' solution (really fancy the 2.5 STi route !)
If any one has a spare RH side exhaust camshaft to suit 2002 WRX heads I would love to hear from you !

NO; Don't do it.

The mechanics at work keep making extra work for me.
They had a look at the dismantled block today and said 'look at all that burnt oil on the pistons, I'd fit a new set of rings and do the valve stem oil seals if you are thinking or putting it back together or using the heads on another short motor'
I only pulled the thing in bits whilst I was trying to get the refund for the 'recon' engine resolved via 'Paypal' !
I was hoping to get away with crank (if I could pick one up cheap), new bearings and gasket set !
I need to bite the bullet, batter the credit card and put a 'new' bottom end in !

Might have a short term solution sorted out !
Bought a replacement exhaust cam and a used bottom end with low miles since rebuild.
Will strip the heads from my car, get the heads skimmed / refaced and fit new valve stem oil seals.
Remove the 'recon' engine and drop the 'stop gap' solution in with the help of the guys at work.
I can then decide how to proceed for real with maybe a CDB 2.1 build or a new 2.5 from Harvey ?

Not started on the engine yet, just waiting for the replacement gasket set (they sent the wrong one !)
The company that supplied the engine have written to me again, this time offering a full refund if I return the engine to them in 'the same working condition' that it left their premises and wait for them to test it before I get my money !
Are they mad ?
I usually get kissed before I get f**ked !
Isn't this just another opportunity for them to come up with some cr*p about how the failure is due to 'unseen forces' (LOL) or some other rubbish and refuse my refund ?
At this point I would be out of pocket by £1300 and they have their engine back to sell to the next mug.
I am going to write one final letter explaining that I want a refund because the item they have supplied is:
a) not as described (which may be a contributary factor in the premature failure)
b) not fit for the purpose.
c) not of 'merchantable quality' as evidenced by its failure after less than 500 miles of running in.
After that, if they don't see sense and realise they are not dealing with a cretin, time for trading standards, small claim etc !
Dunx, sorry to be a pain, do you still have the oil cooler please ?
