The latest build is a low mileage WR1 bottom end with STi 5 heads.
Cosworth sump baffle, RCM uprated oil pump and 25 row Mocal oil cooler with thermostat.
I don't think the issue is overall 'strength' of the bottom end, I think the issue is oil temperature / pressure related on prolonged high speed runs ?

Some people like to challenge the easy route...
They gain our respect for trying, even at a budget.
My 2.1 may be assembled in a barn or in my spare bedroom, but it will be done...
Freedom, to TV's torque wrench !
dunx
P.S. API do have a good "rep"...

i have just rebuilt the engine in my scooby but it made one engine out of 2,one had a nackered bottom end and the other had a melted piston so i just used the bottom end from one and piston from another and its going great, cost me just over 100 pounds for gaskets ect i managed to find of the net,if you are good with the spanners id pull the engine to bits and rebuild it but it take quiet along time to strip and rebuild,i just did mine on the cheap as i just bought the car a few weeks ago s aint got alot of money to be buying brand new parts or a second hand engine

I think the problem is that if you take one of these engines without uprating the oil pump and oil cooling capacity, run it for several miles (not a quick airfield sprint) at an indicated 150 (obviously on a private road or derestricted autobahn), it will do a bottom end.
Small bearing faces, high oil temperature, I think this is the problem with sustained high speed / high RPM running.
Just my opinion but that is what killed the last two 'proper' engines I'm sure.
Hence the addition of the oil cooler and move to FMIC to lower intake temperatures, I figure it needs all the help it can get !
I probably give them more punishment than most people, well according to my passengers at any rate.
The crank isn't snapping, the rods aren't breaking, the pistons aren't melting, I don't think a forged build would sort out the problem without the other supporting mods ?
I hope that what I learn each time it breaks teaches me a bit more, I just get to mess about with it when I have some spare time and it has now become a challenge to rebuild it with some upgrades.
Loads of people suffer bottom end failure on these engines, even on cars owned from new.
They can't all be 'dodgy' second hand bottom ends !

Last two failures were on Millers 10/60 fully synthetic in the first engine and Mobil 1 15/50 in the second, both seem to be well respected oils on here ?
A car like this should be able to handle a bit of VMAX action !
Never had these problems with the tuned 6 cylinder BMW's I used to run !

You have been very unlucky with the two failures but hopefully it will get sorted properley this time. ''Big up respect in a area'' to you for not giving up, and making me giggle like a schoolboy at times ''Spanner wielding gibbons'' was one particular high light.
With all the crap you have had to deal with you deserve a medal so chins up and it has to come good one day for you sooner or later

Thanks Danny !
Today was quite a good day, now managed to get both of the heads on, cams installed and cam covers back on.
It is starting to look a bit more like an engine !
Tomorrow I plan to start swapping all the bits from my WRX inlet manifold to the STi one without TGV's, that should be fun ?
My theory is that today went better because I took the CD player to the lock up so I had music whilst I worked.
Can't beat a bit of 'blue collar' rock, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, etc !

Before deciding on the rebuild components/details I wonder, if you are really going to be stressing the engine in the way that you describe, ie sustained periods of high speed running, whether it is worth contacting experts in this field ?
By that I mean not just people that are familiar with building high power Suburu engines but ones that are subjected to this type of use - sounds more akin to circuit-race type usage than say rallying or drag racing.
Just a thought.

Taken a couple of days off, things are dead at work.
Fitted the STi inlet manifold today, the patron saint of stupidity riding shotgun again !
This time I managed to tighten seven of the eight bolts to the specified torque and then number eight snapped !
Very p***ed off to say the least, I removed the manifold to discover that I had left the four ports stuffed with newspaper !
I had put it in to stop any stray bits of crap falling inside, just picked it up off the bench and straight onto the waiting engine !
Talk about a lucky break !

Fitted the cam pulleys and cam belt pulleys today, I need to take the tensioner into work tomorrow to press the plunger back in !
I also decided that the flywheel that came with the block was slightly more worn than my own, like an idiot I decided to swap them over.
Sweet baby Jesus and the orphans !
If I didn't already have a hernia, I would have got one undoing the bolts !
Even with my (not inconsiderable) weight swinging on the end of a 750mm breaker bar, it was still an uphill battle.
Got the newer one back on now and refitted the clutch, now to see if I get awarded a Knights Cross with oak leaves to pin on my truss !
If anyone was in the neighbourhood this morning, you could have filmed me out on the decking heat wrapping my downpipe and exhaust manifold, easiest £250 from 'You've Been Framed' ever !
God only knows what the neighbours thought !
Plenty of cursing and swearing whilst attempting to mummify some car parts, followed by major blood loss from the stainless steel cable ties !
Hopefully get the cam belt fitted on Sunday, nearly ready to go back into the car now.
Groovy !
