When comparing wheels to fit your car, you also have to factor in the difference in rim width to give a true reflection of where the outer face of the new wheels will be in relation to your existing wheels. For example, if you were to fit a 9" rim with the same offset as your current 8.5" rim, the outer face of the wheel would be half the difference in rim width further outboard i.e. 6.25mm.
Rob's previous wheels were ET50 with an 8.5" rim width, his new wheels are ET35 with a 9.0" rim width. This means that the outer face of the new wheel is 15mm plus half the difference in rim width (6.25mm) further outboard than his old wheels i.e. 21.25mm. As to whether they will fit, the answer is yes, but they will require a slight arch roll.
For the GR STi, an 8.5" rim with an offset of ET35 is just about perfect for the filled arch look without rubbing or arch rolling (tyre choice, ride height and camber dependant of course). However, the ET35 offset does have a detrimental affect on handling. In an ideal world, you would be able to fill the arches without having to roll them and without deviating too far from the design offset so as not to adversely affect handling. For the GR STi that would mean a 9.5" rim with an offset of ET48 - an acceptable 5mm from the design offset of ET53. This would (within 0.5mm) give the same look as an 8.5" rim with an offset of ET35 but without sacrificing handling. Unfortunately, as any rim width increase is both outboard and inboard, that particular combination will create clearance issues with the tyre/wheel and suspension. It's all a compromise!
Cheers, Neil
Looking nice. Is that an MY08 or 11?
White is deffo my top choice colour. As soon as our wedding is done (mid May) I will be on a serious lookout for a white MY11 hatch. I'm a bit worried about the lack of them on the 2nd hand market - loads of saloons but I prefer the look & practicality of the hatch.
Autotrader was showing just 3 of them
when I checked over the weekend and most were high £20k's which is outside of my budget. So if anyone has one or a friend with one who might be thinking of selling up later this year then let me know. Would want a non modded (other than 320/340r) one as like my warranty intact.
Cheers

Offset (ET) is the difference between the centreline of the wheel and the mating face of wheel/hub. Positive offset means the wheel centerline is further inboard than the mating face, negative offset is the opposite.

Cheers Neil that makes perfect sense, up until now I didn't realise that ET was affected by rim width but now you have explained it, it makes sense.
I fitted 8.5 ET35 on my hatch a few years back now and have not noticed any change in handling at all, not in the real world anyway!
I certainly would not be keen on anything wider than 8.5 (with a 245 tyre) myself on a daily driver as mine just about clears the inner arch as it is when on full lock, I even get a little rubbing when in reverse, I think I'd have bigger issues with a 255 tyre. That's not to say though I don't love the look of 9's!

its a 09 STI PPP Hatch
its for sale now
went up this morning to get it changed (under warranty)....
guess what ... the SatNav played up and it didn't know where I was on the road.... looked like I was in a field all the time, wasn't until almost at Doncaster it picked me back up as being on a Road!!!
So glad its been swapped.
Same unit.. nothing else changed. You put your 'old' SatNav Disc back into the unit.
All works fine again

Any increase in rim width is just an additional number you have to factor in when selecting new wheels.
In your case, switching from stock 18x8.5 ET53 wheels to 18x8.5 ET35 wheels you simply subtract 35 from 53 and you know the outside face of the new wheels is 18mm further out than stock.
However, if you switched from stock 18x8.5 ET53 to 18x9 ET35, again you have to subtract 35 from 53 but you then have to add on half the difference in width between 8.5" and 9" (12.7mm). So, 53 - 35 = 18 + (12.7/2) = 24.35. In this scenario the outside face of your new 9" ET35 wheel would be 24.35mm further out than stock.
Hope that makes sense!
Cheers, Neil

Yeah did get it, was just trying to say I thought you could buy any width of wheel and the ET would stay the same on the car, as in a 10" rim with a ET35 would sit the same distance out as a 8" rim with an ET35, previously had not given it a second thought and assumed ET meant the max distance out and any increase in wheel width just meant more wheel inwards.
Always had 8.5 wheels on the hatch so when I went lower ET the rim width stayed the same so did not have to consider this, however it does explain now why some hatches I have seen with an 8" rim and ET53 sit so far bloody in the arches!

Had these made by a mate (works for Ford in the development dept)
they are finished in grey primer so ready to be painted
They have been made from my original ones that were removed when Subaru fitted the fogs for me.

THese can be fitted with the fog light still fitted (as shown above)

Guys
Anyone recommend good LED side bulbs?
I have the SMD5050 ones from te hatch thread, but appears the passenger one has "issues" now - sometimes works, sometimes doesn't
Remove/refit and same thing.
