Death by ANPR?

Here’s another thing that was brought in – in light of the mobile phone usage whilst driving. Police drivers cannot use their radio whilst driving. How is that practical, especially if we are all single crewed.... If I’m perusing a car, then as soon as I use the radio to inform control where it is I should pull over. If I’m going to an emergency call and the control room is updating me, I have to pull over to take the call – how bad is that, how confusing will that be then to other motorist on the road seeing a police car on blues and twos stopping and starting down the road.

If we all 'worked to rule' then nothing will get done - but I suppose this will be the same in a lot of industries

Airwaves are in the same bracket as ipods etc, A hand held electronic device. Same penalty as a mobile.
Police have to justify there actions, If its not practicable (thats a police word, it is the correct spelling) to stop and use the radio, or the car set is not working then providing you can justify your actions using your handset is ok.
The issue the police have is if
A, you stop on a grade 1 or a fail to stop to update everytime an update is needed, no-one would get caught, no grade ones would get attended on time there would be public outrage.
B, If the police use there handset whilst driving and it causes an accident then the public will be outraged.
What we need to concentrate on is a solution to the above, We can blame all day long but it wont stop it happening again.

Tim, the answer is cool. The answer is a snazy Bluetooth earpiece - even looks good arresting shoplifters in B&Q . The technology is so easy - I even have it in my civilian car!!!
Seriously I saw a copper giving scumbags chase on TV and he kept in contact by squeezing a 'talk' button on his chest pocket mounted radio. If he was in an automatic car it might have looked less dangerous....
I appreciate your quandry though, and, as ever, its the top brass letting you downdue to an absence of common sense/support.

Agreed.
So, to get the job done we cut corners and don't do everything strictly by the book - which works, but when the wheel falls off, the job won't support you - as is in this case
